Back in college only the privileged kids had those fancy Mitutoyo digital calipers. Fast forward to 2010 and these things have become accessible to the masses not just the well-to-do. People at work teased me for $14 SE calipers until we tested in with gauge blocks and it was dead nuts accurate! The boss went and bought a boat load of these puppies for everyone and we use them daily. Incredible value! Am I a nerd for reviewing digital calipers? Yes.

First I'm going to run through what came in the box and then I'll describe each item:

1. The digital caliper

2. A spare battery

3. A case

4. Instructions

5. Certificate of calibration

6. Two copies of the MaxTool catalog

First of all, I'm impressed that they hand tested my caliper on 20 different test gauges and included a hand-written table of the amount of error in each coming to an average error of 0.02mm. By the way, the certificate is 0.0055 in. thick :)

Next, the instruction sheet shows a diagram of the tool and tells how to use each function.

There's a spare battery :)

The case holds the caliper and the spare battery. Also, the case is rock-hard plastic with foam padding on the inside.

The caliper itself is awesome. It measures in both inches and millimeters to a tolerance of 0.0005 in. or 0.01 mm. It is capable of being plugged into a computer (cable not included). It has faces for measuring outside diameter, inside diameter, depth and a step (or height). There are three buttons for toggling power, toggling SA and metric and zeroing (or tare).

This is a wonderful buy even if you don't need it. I say this because there will eventually be a time where you'll be doing something and realize that it's the proper tool.

It is no Mitutuyo (which retails for about $90+) and it has one less digit...BUT for most applications this nice little caliper is more than you need. You can have eight of these around the same price! The price figures as a big plus in ranking it, of course, but it works well and it does what it is supposed to do. One small footnote, the steel in the jaws is not very hard (as in a more expensive caliper); it will bend and distort a bit more than you would like it to. But, then again, if you need a top-notch caliper, look at a Mitutoyo or the like. For the price, you can not beat this one.

I bought this unit mostly because I figured I couldn't lose much for so little money. I have since figured it was a great deal. I even recommended my company to buy one for the shop. They were glad I told them. Everyone I have shown this item has told me they are impressed with the quality of build and the very very low price. It came with everything necessary, such as the hard case (good quality) and extra battery. The instructions are all in English and clear. No need to worry about this one. This vendor shipped my caliper on time and I got it in good shape.

I was skeptical of the quality of such an inexpensive caliper but I decided to try it based on the overall good reviews. When I received the calipers the quality was even worse than I was expecting. Many of the measurement surfaces were rough machined with poor surface finish and flatness. The tolerances were so loose you easily move the measuring surfaces out of parallel and even out of allignment with each other. The sliding action was very jerky and prone to binding. Any one of these issues would cause a problem with accuracy and repeatability - together they make the calipers worthless to me. Furthermore, none of the machined edges were broken (polished) so there were some very sharp edges that would most likely cut your hands as you use the calipers.

When I decided to purchase this caliper I figured even if they were poorly made I would keep them as a backup. When I saw how badly they were made I decided to return them for a refund.

Item does everything it claimed and is very precise. It measures depth as well as width and inside measurements. I used it to build a precise piece of furniture where depth and hole size had to be precise measurements. Everything turned out great the first time.

... but usually it just produces random numbers, measurements that are impossible (22 inches?!). Apparently the makers are aware of this habit, as the instructions said to wipe the shaft to dry it otherwise you get crazy results... but this unit was not wet. It started doing that right out of the box (as soon as I replaced the battery, because of course the one already installed was dead... so much for the "spare" battery.) Later it started occasionally giving "right" answers (at least the numbers looked reasonable and when I opened it and closed it it returned to zero) but then it reverted to crazy answers. A piece of junk.

The first caliper we received didn't work, but the vendor responded immediately to my email and sent a new one out the next day. The new caliper works perfectly and is a very good value. This vendor highly recommended for their customer service and product pricing.

I guess you get what you pay for.

I was hoping for a better made product but this is very poorly made including the LED readout which does not capture the measurment easily. The numbers keep moving after you take a measurment and you need to measure a few times to be sure it is correct.

Calipers are cheap and stopped working after a few months. Every time the caliper is adjusted it either shuts off or resets the reading to zero no matter where it is.
