Kai DX versus Nuckal, and a big ol' ATV too!
on March 26, 2012
My son is just starting to get into Lego's Ninjago line in a big way, so when we saw some of the 2011 sets on clearance at the local Lego store he was happy to part with his allowance. One of the sets we grabbed was Nuckal's ATV. This set includes a monster truck-type vehicle (with creepy skeleton elements), the bad guy Nuckal, the red ninja Kai (not just any Kai, but Kai DX, which my son assures me is a VERY BIG DEAL) and a spinner so Kai can unleash some Spinjitzu on his foe. Kai comes with a sword and Nuckal has a cool scythe made of bones.
Complexity: The set has 174 pieces, and aside from the big monster truck wheels, they're all really tiny. My son does OK with the simpler sets, but the Technic elements alone meant I got to play with (I mean, was forced to assemble) this one. It took about 30 minutes altogether.
Playability: The ATV is a bit more fragile than I would like, but it's still a fun toy to play with. My son appreciated that it came with a spinner (we didn't have any of those yet), and absolutely loves the missile-firing action. It has broken a few times, but it's not too hard to put back together.
This is a fun Ninjago set, and if it's not the best Lego has to offer it still has a high fun factor. Honestly, at the sale price this set was worth it just for the Kai (sorry, Kai DX) and Nuckal figures and the spinner.
