We do a LOT of sealing in our family and have burned through many sealers. The GameSaver held up terrific to our workload of 1 steer, 3 hogs, and many deer. We didn't have to worry about over-heating, it kept up and sealed every time.

Given some very negative reviews on this unit, I reluctantly purchased the FoodSaver GameSaver G500 due to the fact that its functions/design was closest to the FoodSaver Professional II which had served me well for over 10 years of bagging fresh gamefish.

I've used it twice now, the second time to consecutively seal up about 20 bags of tuna steaks and other fish. Thus far I've had no overheat issues and the unit has functioned exactly as suggested. It seems to evacuate at least as much air as my previous model and is very easy to use. If anything, the seal is slightly wider which is a good thing.

In checking out the choices, the G500 unit seems much sturdier than the next unit down ($139 model) which felt very flimsy and lacked the external sliding bag cutter.

I hope I'm reporting the same thing a year and then again two years from now but so far I've had none of the issues that others have complained about and instead the unit is functioning perfectly. The only reason for the 4-Stars is that I've only used it a couple times to date, so saving any better review for a larger sample.

I have owned this unit for about three years now and it does a lot of jobs around the house. It is a small capacity unit, it does not operate at Lightning Airborne Speed! It does heat up, and when it does, I unplug it, let it cool for 1/2 hour, then go back to work. I can easily vacuum pack -40- pounds of smoked salmon without it over heating, to me, that is a bonus. There are units more expensive than this one but this one fills the bill. I recently dropped it from about ten feet up, sadly it did not survive the fall, so I have done my homework, widened my budget, compared what is out there and am right back here, purchasing a 2nd unit. The 12v dual power is a bonus to me as well, not a common option. There are more expensive units out there, so, do your homework. For the person who buys a pallet of NY Steaks at COSTCO and would like to freeze them and NEVER get freezer burn, look no further.

The product description above is a flat-out lie. No sportsman in his right mind would want this piece of junk. You'll be lucky to get it to seal once correctly, let alone work in any heavy duty application. We purchased this product about 6 months ago and stupidly did so without reading reviews first. This product should never have been released. It is completely defective and absolute garbage. Foodsaver is a great name, and we bought it based on the strength of their reputation. The first time we used it we noticed that it formed a very poor vacuum. It just wasn't strong enough to really pull the air out. The second time, the problem got even worse. This time around, we were just tryng to vacuum pack some veggies from the garden, and the sealer completely failed. It will only seal the bags if you vacuum the air out, release the seal, then hit the seal button. Even then, it only seals about 1/3 of the time. Now that we are doing more research, it seems this is a universal problem. This product is notoriously defective. DO NOT BUY IT. You'll be sorry.

I purchased the Foodsaver Gamesaver Silver for vacuum sealing bulk purchased products. I have vacuum sealed 50 pounds of Almonds, 25 pounds of Cashews, and 25 pounds of Dates, all done in 4 cup bags. I would have given it 5 stars except for the overheating issue. This is not a huge problem considering it only happened after doing about 20 pounds of products quick. It would have been nice if Foodsaver would have put a fan on it for cooling. I also tested the 12 volt feature and it works just as good as when it was plugged into the outlet, manual says it may have a longer cycle which probably relate to the voltage of your batter and charging system of the vehicle, it says to have it running which will boost voltage. If you are looking for a vacuum sealer for continuous use I would recommend a commercial vacuum sealer. This one does great for the money you pay!

My husband bought one of these sealers locally. The first time we used it, we could not get it to seal. We returned it the same day and the retailer gladly exchanged it and said no one else had had a problem with it. He owned one and his worked great. We took the second one home and used it that afternoon with no problems and also used it again about two weeks later to package venison. About a week after that, we bought some meat that need to be repackaged and when we tried to use the sealer, there was no vacuum. It made all the right noises but no air was removed from the bag. I called customer service and a really nice man walked me through several tests before telling me to return it to the retailer for another exchange. When we got to the retailer, they gave us our money back because another customer had returned three (3) defective ones and now we were returning our second defective one. They were not ordering any more and were looking for a more reputable machine. Kudos to our retailer - but not for the Foodsaver Gamesaver.

Bought this unit for our great Alaskan fishing trip b/c of the advertised heavy duty usage possibility, after 5 fillets the g500 started to overheat. We then had to wait about ten minutes for it to cool down. After it finally cool down we started sealing again and we ran into the same problem after another 5 fillets. Aka it was a very long night of waiting for the unit to operate. Not worth buying this unit. Anyone looking for a heavy duty, high usage vacuum sealer the Game saver silver g500 is not for you.

This model of Foodsaver's vacuum sealing systems is really great. I had another model for about 10 years that finally quit. Based on my experience with that unit and my further research, I chose this model as one that should serve my needs for another 10 years or so. Compared to many of the newer models of Foodsaver units now available, this one requires much more manual control, from closing it to starting the sealing process by pressing a button. I chose this model for the manual control features because of my prior experience with occasional problems with the automatic sealing of the older unit I'd had. Another feature that really attracted me to this model is the wider, more durable sealing strip. This unit seals the Foodsaver bags much better with a wider seal than my older unit, and I feel much more comfortable with the reliability of the seal over time in freezer storage. Also, the sealing system in this unit allows a number of sealing actions, at least 25, before overheating and requiring a break in operation to cool down. The last feature that attracted me is the "limited" lifetime warranty. But, the purchaser needs to read the fine print-- It is limited to defects in materials and workmanship for a period extending to one year after the particular model has been discontinued. A purchaser of this product can just hope they keep making it for a long time! Finally, this model has a feature that I probably won't use, but would be a real benefit to the avid fisherman--The 12-volt power hookup that allows the fresh fish, and other game, to be packaged soon after they are caught using the power system of a vehicle or other 12-volt direct current power source.

This is a big, skookum machine, heavy-built, with big buttons; a man's unit. There are no fancy automatic functions to go hay-wire. You cut the bag off the roll using the sliding cutter, after you have sealed the bottom of the bag. It did a good job for me, sealing right through moisture from steaks. On the left side, there is a vacuum outlet, and a compartment containing a tube. This is for sealing containers and jars using accessory gadgets (not included with the sealer). There is a cord for plugging into a 12 volt source (cigarette lighter) so you can use it in the camper on a hunting or fishing trip. I'm glad I found this one.

Arrived in a timely manner, and has way out performed the last foodsaver sealer I bought. It does oh into over heat after about 20 seals. As I package a lot of sealed things that can be a time killer but I also can a lot of things and this works great. Would recommend it to anyone.
