I found this on clearance at Walmart and so bought it without knowing anything about it. I played it with a couple friends (we are all in our mid-20s) and it was HYSTERICAL. We were laughing so hard we were crying. It's extremely easy to learn - basically you just do whatever the cards tell you. It's very similar to Cranium in that there are different categories such as trivia and performing, but the characters, board, and even the questions and activities are all a little edgier and more creative. What gives it a real twist are the "Roolz" cards (rules cards) that remain in play for the entire game once they are drawn. They are anything from "Repeat everything you say twice" to "Snort like a pig every time you laugh" -- and trust me, you'll be laughing.

This game is such a blast! When my sister came to visit, my husband and I played with her. We were laughing so much! Whenever someone drew a card I had to baaaa like a lamb! And my husband had to talk like the opposite sex for most of the game! Just those two things had us rolling over and over! That was such fun, I got my sister this game for Christmas! My new go to party game!

I got this board game for a family vacation with guests. We gave it a test run before packing it and found ourselves laughing and having fun but I'm not sure it would work for our vacation of adults with small kids. The game is rated for 12+ but I'd recommend even older (15+). I think this game would appeal best to the college crowd. Also, more people playing equals more fun.

There are 8 characters to choose from (super ninja monkey, Mr. Lugnut, Queen Spatula, etc.) and although it has colored coded categories like Cranium, they have a different spin. Each card has instructions with a Quelf Effect. Blue is Roolz (speak like a charismatic preacher every time you read a card aloud), purple is Showbiz (using interpretive dance as language, perform the following sentence), yellow is Stuntz (lick your elbow and then an opponent's elbow), red is Scatter Brainz (gives 2 topics to choose from to talk about - reasons you loved or had a crush on someone or reasons you have broken up with someone) and green is Quizzle (name the 3 ingredients of Tabasco Sauce). The instructions warn that if you do not think you can complete a card's instructions safely (?!) to just pick another one. This made us curious but have not found anything we considered dangerous so far.

Before breaking out this board game, know your crowd since some of the the instructions can cause fights and some of the Quelf Effects are very silly. It's not a game for everyone but it is a lot of fun for the right crowd. I'll stick with our usual board games (Scattergories,Cranium,Pictionary and The Game of Things) but keep this one for a change of pace.

I would firstly like to say that this is a great game for a group of people, it's fun, entertaining, and is never the same game twice.
That being said, the version I received had quite a few aesthetic differences. The picture shown shown on the page shows a very intricate gameboard, mine was not like that at all. The board I received is a plain spiral pattern, with alternating colors, no where near the amount of detail shown. The play pieces are also completely different, shown in the picture are quite a few unique characters. The pieces I got consist of only colored plastic, almost like rainbow chess pawns.

So overall, the game is great, just don't expect it to look like it does in the picture.

My 8 yr. and 10 yr. old nephews absolutely love this game. I was freaked out when it was delivered; it said "adult" on box, but there's nothing inappropriate, not sure why.

I just finished playing this game with my extended adult family. We are all Cranium fans and get a kick out of funny board games. Things started off a little slow because we had to read the rules and it was our first game. The instructions were clear and not too long. So once we read the first side of the instruction sheet, we were ready to play, and just used the rest of the instructions as sort of a cheat sheet.

The cards you draw tell you what to do so most of the game is just rolling die, moving, and following the instructions on the cards. Because I like Cranium and other quiz games, my favorite categories were Quizzle and Scatterbrainz. Although, you will probably get the most laughter out of the Roolz, Stuntz, and Showbiz categories. This game is very similar to Cranium, just a little more zany.

There was one point in the game where I had to snort like a pig everytime I laughed, while my Dad was stuffing fruit in his shirt. It sounds silly, but we had some hysterical, tear-inducing, laughter going on, during a couple parts of the game. This game is silly, and fun, and moves really fast. You would have the most fun playing it with fun loving, less inhibited people.

We have had game night with our friends once a month - we have been doing so for years. We have a blast each time, but Quelf took us to a whole new level. We literally were hurting from laughing so hard. It is pure silly fun! When the evening consists of opera singing, ballet dancing, and playing the entire game with your elbows on the table, you know it's a good time!

Quelf is a recipe for a wacky fun time, but is a game that is much better played just for the experience than to win. The whole game should be taken lightly and played with a huge grain of salt. However, if taken with that spirit this game can be a side-splitting good time.

Now, it works like a simplified version of Cranium, each player rolls a die, moves that many spaces, and draws a card based on the color of the space. The categories of these cards are: Stuntz, Showbiz, Quizzle, Rulez, and Scatterbrainz... and that is where the similarities to Cranium fade away. The tasks and questions and rules you must follow inspire zany activity and hilarious memories. I still vividly remember my mother-in-law breathing like Darth Vader during my husband's turns for half the game or everyone at the table shouting out things you could use to secure a live chicken to your forehead before I just couldn't think of anything else and we all laughed for a while at everything that we'd come up with beforehand (someone even said "staples!" ouch!). You also may find yourself running about for pencils (not included, but needed), playing hide-and-go-seek with adults, or convincing everyone at the table to run outside with you.

Some of the activities may make some people uncomfortable, so graciously allowing them another card draw is all part of the light spirit, but helps encourage the fun and laughter to continue for everyone. For a party game playing from 3 to 8 this can be a blast and does run about an hour. Despite all the penalties and silliness, it often ends up surprisingly balanced with my husband winning only by 2-4 spaces over the rest of us. I highly recommend this game for a good laugh with groups of people who know each other, even if only casually.

Lastly, a brief mention of the components. The character stand-ups are brightly colored and quite thematic, sharing the wacky quirks of the whole game with a banana-wielding monkey ninja to a hill-billy biscuit farmer. The die and board are standard fare and sturdy. The timer with the game works well. However, the cards (while there's a lot of them in the five colors mentioned) are a touch thinner than playing cards and have square-edges so I expect will show wear quickly. This said I really don't think this will detract from the game play at all, especially if going just for the fun of it!

Quelf is such a strange game. Minutes into playing my face is tired from smiling. My normally stoic demeanor is gone and I have become a laughing maniac. It must be the cards. They turned me into this. I wouldn't be singing opera to old men usually and I haven't tried to drink a glass of water upside down since I was a child. No matter. I don't miss being serious anymore. The cards say I have to snort like a pig when I laugh. Don't even have to try any more. It's natural now. I've never done that in my life but for the love of God it just happens now. This game changes people. We had to stop the game before finishing last time and the cards said we had to address my brother as King. We haven't stopped yet. I'm not joking when I say this game has changed my life.

Definitely an odd game - but fun for a big group! I would recommend playing with people you're comfortable with as there are some cards that require you to hold hands with someone, go find lipstick in the home, etc. Definitely brings a good laugh!
