I replaced an old shimano XT that was beat up and needed replacement. This one works just as well. It does seem to make more noise on descents in rough terrain. I'm also a little leery of the cable routing. It points towards the wheel (instead of away on the old non-shadow style) and is very close to the spokes. You can only have about 30mm of cable past the derailleur or it will be in your spokes. It is very compact (no wider than the quick release axle). Is that going to help at all? Not sure, I already have a couple scrapes from rocks after a few technical rides but maybe the old style would have been worse than scrapes.

I do like that the cable routing doesn't have the big loop at the end. This seems like it will ensure prolonged smooth shifting. Only issue there is if you have a spare old (non-shadow) style derailleur, you will have to cut new cable and housing to put the old style on.

I'd recommend as a replacement but if you have a decent one (LX/XT) that is in good working order, don't replace with this style until you need a new one.

Puts a lot of tension on your chain. Say goodbye to constant chain slap. Don't be confused by this 'direct mount' marketing stuff, it fits any standard mtb/dh frame.

A very fast snd smooth shifting Shadow. Better than any other Shimano! Buy one for reliable shifting and long life.

Wanted to replace the older XT derailleur on my fat bike but didn't want to go whole hog with 10-speed, so this was the derailleur to get. I'm running 1x9 so no clutch is a bummer, but as it is the shifting is much snappier now and I'm well pleased, especially given the price.

Appears to be a good product but have had so much bad weather and waiting on a hanger I have not used it.
I was not aware at the time of purchase that this is not always a bolt on item; I had to purchase a derailer hanger that cost half what the derailer cost.

I have a 2010 Giant Trance mountain bike that after 4 years finally experienced a failure in the derailleur. After a long walk home and a quick search on Amazon yielded the perfect replacement at a decent price, and before long I was up and running again. Easy to install (was replacing a similar, if not identical model), easy to adjust, and after a new chain and plenty of lube I'm back to silky smooth shifting.

So why did the 4-year old SLX derailleur fail in the first place? It was pretty beat up for starters, and conditions were a little sticky which combined to a chain which was also a little worn was a good recipe for disaster. But at least I'm back up and running!

Love my bike, love my components, and this derailleur is a trusted friend on the trails... as long as you keep it maintained!

This derailleur replaced the stock Deore M591 on a new Giant Trance X4. The SLX shifts light years faster and much more precisely. The 591 would finally, eventually, shift to the next cog...when it felt like it. I was shocked on the first ride with the SLX how aggressively the bike now shifted. It practically rips the chain off the cog! Night and day difference.

Another plus was ease of installaion. Most Shimano products are compatible and all I had to do was bolt it on and adjust. No cable changes necessary. The only complaint would be on rough, fast downhills I have experienced some ghost shifts. I might be able to adjust that out, but the bike is so vastly improved I'm just not worried about it.

For the price you can't go wrong.

Replaced a shimano alivio with the slx on my trek 7.3. So far The SLX seem to be snappier than the alivio which is nice but I'm still using the stock (low end) shifters which is why I only notice a small improvement in shifting smoothness. Once I upgraded he shifters, the shifting should be like butter. Just remember that this is a medium cage derailleur so if you currently have a long cage, you'll have to remove a few links of chain to use the slx. Overall excellent purchase and upgrade for my 7.3.

I bought one at my LBS just to upgrade to the Shadow Plus. The clutch is awesome. It greatly reduces and nearly eliminates chain slap. I also have not experienced any dropped chains since installing. In the past, I would drop my chain over rough rock gardens or after a big drop. The clutch, which is on the Plus versions only, is worth every penny.

This is my first clutch rear derailluer, it works awesome and was easy to set up. It replaced a non clutch xt 10sp rear der and shifts just as good but has no chainslap whatsoever. Using it 1x10 with a Wolftooth components drop stop ring and its working great.
