I bought this a couple of weeks ago and have it on my counter. I was apprehensive about buying it when I found out that the ice just fell in a basket and there was nothing to keep it cold. Now that I have this home and see how it works, this little machine is fantastic. When the ice melts it just recycles back down in the reservoir. We use purified water in it not tap water. Its just my husband and I and we have never run out of ice. You can leave it going all night and when you get up in the a.m. you have a full basket of ice just in cast you are an iced coffee person. Now as far as the price. Amazon is "usually" great with their prices but I always shop around and I bought mine at Walmart for $139.00....a big savings even with the shipping. This particular item did not have site to store for my area.

This was 30 minutes into its first startup. It harvested ice every 10 minutes on the "large" setting. Very nice operation and very quiet considering what it does.

I bought this item last year and it's been powered up and running since it came out of the box, making ice LITERALLY NON-STOP for about a year. Sadly, the motor seems to have conked out so I'm buying another one. Don't tell Amazon but I got mine at a much lower price at a particular big-box store.

I love ice and eat it like candy (so the fact that these "cubes" are slightly on the soft side is great for me!), in addition to using it in drinks (duh), for headaches, and all the things ice is for. This little jewel worked like an absolute champ for a solid year, without being turned off even once, and became indispensable in the household.

Some have complained that the ice melts too fast in a drink but I have to disagree. I think it depends on what you're drinking out of what kind of container. I use insulated plastic glasses or cups and the ice from this machine lasts a very long time; I usually have a lot of ice left over even after the drink is gone. On the other hand, if you're using plain plastic cups out in the sunshine, it may indeed melt pretty fast.

Considering that it's really meant for parties or vacation homes or similar intermittent use, I'm giving it 5 stars despite its failing after a year because I really do believe I worked it harder than it was intended to be worked, and it never faltered until it finally just quietly stopped. The highest compliment I can pay it is that I took for granted that I'd always have ice - it was that reliable. ...wait, that's the second biggest compliment. The biggest compliment is that I'm buying another one exactly like it!

After reviewing several portable ice makers, I decided to take my chances with this one. After following the mfg. instructions - letting it sit upright for 4 hours after shipment, washing it, placing it on the counter at least 5 inches from a wall, and then letting it sit for another hour - I plugged it in, poured in a gallon of water and had ice within 10 minutes. The first ice was a little small, but after the initial run, the ice is the correct size and does not have a metallic taste. It is a little wet, so if you put it in the freezer it will stick together. I break it apart and it does not stick together after that. It makes much more ice than we can possibly use, so I do not run it continuously. Two baskets of ice fill up my ice bin in my freezer. It makes a basket of ice in about two hours. The fan runs quietly, it is a little noisy as it gets ready to drop the ice. I have had it a week, and am very pleased with its performance and highly recommend it. If anything changes, I will update this post.

Update: Dec. 2011 - ice maker has been working for 6 weeks without any problems at all. It makes more ice than we can possibly use. Highly recommend this product.

Just purchased this ice machine for our bar. OMG - can it make ice! After trying the small to medium, I ended with the large ice. It didn't take any much longer at all to make the large ice we prefer. I put it in large zip lock bags to store in the freezer and finally had to turn it off for awhile to give us time to use up some. It is a machine for sure and I highly recommend it. The ice tasted great and so easy to use without running water lines, etc.

Makes as much ice as we can use in an average day in about 3 hours. Will make ice all day and night as long as you refill it and keep the tray emptied. The cubes are shaped more like tubes with holes in them. They are good and fun to eat as well as keeping your drink cold.

Magic Chef Portable Ice Maker, MCIM22TW (w = white)

NOTE: I got mine from Walmart online and saved some money

I am a refrigeration mechanic with over 35 years in the trade
This little ice maker works GREAT, You must follow instructions:

IMPORTANT: let stand UPRIGHT unplugged for the number of hours recommended in the manual, this lets all the compressor oil go back to the compressor (from being upside down or whatever in shipping)

I let mine sit over night to be sure

CAUTION: clean it well before using ice, first use some DAWN and a wash cloth to wash everything you can inside (including all the chrome rods that make the ice)

Then rinse it well ( I just sat mine in the sink and used the faucet spray arm to rinse all the soap away) repeat the rinsing a few times (rinse and then tilt unit over to empty)
Then make sure you run a 50/50 mixture of vinegar and water through the pump, do this by adding the vinegar and water, then start the ice maker up, look inside and as soon as the pump is done filling the tray unplug the unit and let it sit with the vinegar and water in the tray (it pumps twice to fill it so wait till the compressor starts to unplug it)

After letting it sit for 20 minutes tip it over and empty it, NOTE: I didn't use the drain because I FOUND LITTLE BITS OF PLASTIC, BLACK STUFF and even bits that look like metal, Tipping it over is the only way to make sure you get the DIRT out, the drain is the same area that leads to the pump, so you want to be sure (use a flashlight and magnifier to look at the water in the bottom of the unit)

Repeat the vinegar and water treatment a few times, keep looking for the small fine bits of dirt

After you are sure you have it clean it is time to start the process of removing the vinegar and making ice

I would NOT consume the first days worth of ice for fear of eating a contaminate

We made ice all day, every 3rd time it dumps the ice remove it to a 2 gallon ziploc and put it in your freezer
After two days of making ice and just throwing it in the sink (we made about six 2gallon bags before consuming any of it)

REMEMBER, once you put it in your mouth it's too late..... Be extra safe !!

The crap they leave in the machine's hoses is terrible, You would think they would at least clean it a bit at the factory

NOW for the GOOD NEWS !! It is so worth it !! This machine makes very consistent ice, MUCH BETTER THAN BAG ICE
I make three 2gallon bags, when I open the last bag to use, I start making ice again till I have another 3 bags

I AM SO HAPPY WITH THIS MACHINE, It is not "junk" as others have said, I feel it is a very good quality, AND the compressor in mine sounds GOOD !!

Joe

This machine does not work properly. It didn't make the amount of ice advertised from the get go and after a couple of months only makes three (3) cubes at a time. It is also noisy.

Like another reviewer I found this item cheaper at Walmart. I ordered it online, drove 30 minutes to pick it up, lugged it home, followed the instructions exactly including allowing it to stand upright unplugged for 4 hours. It took awhile but it produced approximately 30 small cubes and hasn't worked since. It keeps telling me to add more water and it is at the maximum. I even drained it and poured water back into the unit. Same problem. So, now I have to drain it, wrap it all back up, and haul it back to Walmart. And, then maybe try another, probably more expensive, model.
