I brought the Trunki for my 4 year old and was skeptical about it after looking at all the reviews about the trunk popping open. I pulled the trigger and bought it anyway thinking if it didn't last the trip I would return it. When it came in the mail I looked over the instructions and was scared to see special instructions on replacing the latch after it pops off. Taking a closer look at them I found that there is a few steps that you need to take to ensure the case wouldn't open. I made sure both clips slid down and locked them before letting my 4 year old on. I also didn't over stuff it with toys and stuffed animals. It worked great I didn't have any problems with the case opening. (I should mention I did have the saddle on it, however I tested it with and with out the saddle and it didn't matter the case stayed shut. I would recommend using the saddle if you think it will pop open because it would be extra security)

That being said, she loved it. She used it as a seat when eating, played on it while we waited at the gate, and rode it while I pulled her through the airport. The case fits under the seat and the over head compartment easily. The only negative thing I have to say about it is that it doesn't turn easily. My daughter would use her legs to help me turn it and working together it went smooth. You have to slid the front wheels little by little to get it turning. It sounds like a pain in the butt but I was walking around the airport at a fast speed not thinking about it and I was able to weave in and out of people with minimum effort. The Trunki rolls over all the bumps we cam in contact with at the airport. My daughter only fell off twice, one time she dropped her stuff animal and thought she could get it by leaning down and scooping it up and the other was my mistake taking a corner to fast and not paying attention.

All and all I give this product 5 stars, great for kids. I am expecting it to last until my 1 year old is old enough. For the price you can't expect to much but I would say it is worth every penny or maybe worth a little more.

Hi,
I normally would never write any review, but because the Trunki has such bad reviews I am going to write one this time. First to say, we have 4 kids under the age of 5 and we travel at least once a year to Germany with a 10 hour flight.
This year I found the Trunki suddenly on Amazon.com and was very hesitant to buy it because of the bad reviews.
I am sooooooooooo happy I did buy it.
I bought for my 4,5 year old Sunny (orange) and for my 3 and 2 year old 2 Trixis (pink).
From the start, they loved the suitcase. They where riding it around the house. They also said that these are their dogs.
I read that the suitcase sometimes opens unexpectedly and because I didn't want to deal with that I made a belt for the suitcase.
On the day of our big journey, we packed the suitcases with all kinds of things and made the belt around.
On the airport the kids where pulling the suitcases without any problems. When we had to wait in line for a long time, the kids sat on their suitcases and then drove around on them. People where turning right and left for us and asking where we got them.
After our 10 hour flight the kids where very tired and so we sat them on their suitcases and we pulled them all over the airport. The suitcase never tipped forward or to the side. They fit perfectly under the plane seats and in the over head storage.
Now after we are back and the suitcases where driven around 4 airports, I can say, that this is the best Idea ever.
We never lost any wheels, nothing broke and the snaps also never broke off.
We used the suitcases instead of a stroller and this was a really good idea.
So I can say, these suitcases are worth every penny and make your trips so much easier.
I hope this review helped a little bit, in making decisions about the Melissa & Doug Trunki.

My son opened this today as an early Christmas gift, as we will be traveling in the upcoming months. I was so excited and I had also purchased the optional Saddlebag to go with it.

At first glance, the quality looked good. Then when we tried to open the suitcase, one of the clasps popped off. We checked the instructions and there was actually a page that said that that might happen during "play," and there were instructions on how to fix it.

Suffice to say it took three adults a half an hour, a screw driver, and a file to fix the clasp. It popped back on just fine, but the plastic is cheap and so the mechanism that needed to slide was getting bent. It is possible that the first trip we take, the Trunki will break. If it does, I will return it immediately. I was really annoyed.

Also, the four "secret compartments" on the inside of the Trunki fit (seriously - my son experimented) about 5 jelly beans each. If you pushed. I have no idea what you would actually be able to put in there. I am also worried that the plastic hook that you fasten the strap to might break if the child was sitting on the luggage and being pulled.

On the plus side, there seems to be ample room inside the suitcase. The colors are nice and my son is excited to use it. I paid about 29 dollars for the Trunki. I do not think this is worth $40, but for $29, it is acceptable. As long as it doesn't break.

Update: We used this on a trip. The clasps broke off (both) and we cannot get them reattached, even the way Melissa and Doug says to. When my son sat on the Trunki in the airport, with the suitcase locked, the sides started to separate. We ended up having to tell him that he could not sit on it and my husband just carried it. Big disappointment.

Amazon DID replace this item very quickly at their expense. Hopefully the next one will be better.

Update: Second was same as first. Still no luck with the product.

Update 11/22/11: I was contacted by the company and the representative has very kindly offered to send us a new Trunki. Will keep updates coming...

I purchased two Trunkis for my 3 and 5 year olds for a trip we were taking. Both kids took a tumble at first as it tends to tip forward, but once they got the hang of it that wasn't a problem. I also purchased the "saddle/purse" option and that is supposed to help make them sit back more - it is kind of a necessity since Melissa and Doug added the handles right where a child sits! The product is supposed to handle up to 100 pounds, but my 5 year old (48 pounds) was too big for it. She was too long and lanky and scooting along was awkward for her. After going halfway down the airport terminal with me pulling her, one of the wheels popped off. It snapped back on, but by then she was done. We ended up strapping these to our carry ons and hauling them - they became something of a nuisance. There should be a suggested age range - I would recommend them for a 3 year old (31 pounds) as mine rode on hers fairly well. They stow in an overhead nicely enough and are fairly easy to pull. Also, ended up by-passing escalators with them in tow. Keep in mind that you aren't supposed to check them - some small flights make you check your carry ons. They are cute, but if I had it to do over, I would have skipped it.

To be honest with you, I could not have been more excited when I saw this product, but that is nothing compared to my son's excitement when he saw it. In fact he had come up behind me when I was looking at suitcases for our trip, and when he saw these he really, really wanted one. I admit though, that after reading other reviews about quality problems (particularly with the clasps) I did feel a bit hesitant, but I figured that the odds of us getting a deffective product had to be pretty slim, right? Wrong! Ours arrived promptly (always does when it comes from Amazon!) and I pulled it out of the box to the oohs and ahhs of my son, and it promply opens in my hands. I tried to close it because, of course the first thing my som wants to do is ride on it, but I simply could not get it to keep closed. After examining the clasp it was quite clear that the plastic pieces were already broken. Suffice it to say, we all went from being very excited to incredibly disappointed in less than two minutes. My advice, don't let your children see this-they will want one, because they are very cute, but until Melissa and Doug fix this, it is simply not worth the disappointment!

I have a pair of lightweight toddlers that are enamored with their new Trunkis. They've figured out how to maneuver them, and the locks have been sturdy this far. There's plenty of capacity, but little ability to organize the interior, so I also purchased the Melissa & Doug mesh bag inserts & saddle / shoulder bags, and the whole package is going to make traveling through the airport and on the plane *much* easier. I've been able also to link two Trunkis together and drag the kids across the tile in my house, much to their delight - and I expect to do this in the airport as well. Overall this product fits a niche in a really good way and I'm super pleased that I no longer have to worry about trying to get the kids' carry on into back packs or deal with an umbrella stroller that they decide they don't want to ride in.

Pros:
Kids love them and can maneuver them on their own.
If the kid doesn't want to pull it, I can pull it with zero issue.
If they both resist pulling it, I link them together in a Trunki train.
The novelty of traveling with it
Usability after travel is done, for organizing toys, Trunki races (yes, we've had them already) or neighborhood pool trips.

Cons:
While the clasps have been fine this far, I do fear they won't last forever based on other reviews. Kind of a minor con.
Plastic wheels also are not long for this world; but I think we can get replacements if we need to through M & D.
Lack of separated compartments or a better way to secure the inner load is a little disappointing to me, but we've fixed that with the mesh bags.

Bought this for my 3 1/2 year old daughter for our roundtrip to California from Illinois with layovers. She loved it! I gave it to her right before the trip and gave her the stickers to go with it, which let her personlize it even more. We put her clothes on the side with the elastic straps (enough for 5 days) and her toys on the other side. It fit perfectly under the plane seat. She was proud of her trunki and wanted to pull it herself. When she was tired she loved riding on it. It was smooth riding and went over small bumps easily. It sure saved a lot of struggles. We did have one issue with the plastic clasp sticking but we were able to easily fix it. Many people got a kick out of it and recognized it is a good idea - they wanted one in an adult size! I travel a greal deal and I have witnessed parents struggles with their small kids. For $30 it was well worth the money and the peace of mind - it puts the fun back into travel.

Update - Melissa & Doug contacted me a supplied me a with a replacement Trunki. I am happy to report that the new Trunki works perfectly and without any issue with the latches. I will update the video portion of the review shortly. I have changed my rating from 2 to 4 stars (would have been 5 if it wasn't for my previous issues)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Melissa & Doug Trunki is a excellent idea that combines storage with fun. Our daughter loves riding her Trunki around our house (and presumably the airport if it lasted that long) and she loved how she could store her stuffed animals, band while the first trunki had issues with the latches #2 is operating perfectly!

A few things we like,

- It scooted along the floor with ease our daughter (age about 20 months) was able to ride just like her other riding toys
- Stores about the same amount of stuff as a large show box
- Bright colored
- Has a long "Leash" in case you want to tow the suitcase
- Hard shell can take a beating

Areas for improvement
- Not sure if the wheels will last - I worry about their durability
- The biggest issue - the latches on first the suitcase are very poor. We had a difficult opening and closing the suitcase.

Final Verdict - Our second Trunki works very well and our daughter loves the novelty of riding around on her brightly colored suitcase.

4 Stars (2 Stars for our first Trunki - but 5 for the second one)

Iris is cute but that's about all she has going for her. Great idea bad design. Her wheels should move in all directions so she can take the hallway corners in the airport however she only rolls forward so she falls over when entering a turn. she also can not hold very much and her openers are very hard to use meaning opening her up to use on the airplane was out of the question. Iris spent most of her travel time being carried by me or my husband and my 4 years was following behind crying. I love Melissa & Doug products however they missed their target on this one. Amazon was very fair to work with on the return.
