Still...Amazing!,

This review is from: still... (Audio CD)
The most known unknown....that pretty much sums up the sentiment on who Conya Doss is to her legion of underground fans. Now on her fourth album (yes, she's been doing it for awhile now, people!) Conya Doss releases Still..., the perfect title since she's all about staying the course with her unpretentious melodies to accompany her down-to-earth lyrics. "Common Ground" is a story about actually trying to keep a relationship together, a notion that is repeated on the equally enjoyable tracks "How About Us" and "Let Me Love You." Conya professes her undying love on "Can't Stop," and she continues that same dedication with "What I'd Do." She works up a delightful ditty for the album's lead-off single "Something 2Nite," while "It's Over" is the perfect break-up song to leave on somebody's voicemail when they aren't holding up their end of the relationship. She picks up the pace a little with "Right On Time," a song that could easily be placed in a club mix of some sort. "I Miss You" is a remarkable ballad that sounds like she took her time with creating it, making it more than a simple regret song. Fellow Dome labelmate Angela Johnson does great production work on "Emotions," while "Turn It Up" talks about escaping from it all by blasting your favorite track on the radio. "Come Over" talks about stepping to somebody for some conversation to see what it leads to. "Message" is a passionate ode to her supportive fans who've encouraged her along the way to keep doing her thing. She closes the album with the smooth, mid-tempo track "Ride." Still... embodies what all of her long-time fans have been used to all these years, and what the R&B world has been craving from the artists that they do know about. I think it's time for everybody to look beyond the Top 40 charts and the stale radio playlists if they're looking for real music. With a little digging, you'll eventually find quality albums like Conya Doss' Still...

This woman CANNOT make a bad CD. That's it. LOL, she has STILL got it! In fact, she's continually getting better. Conya delivers again. Wow, how much I want the world to embrace her...yet at the same time, I would never want her to have to succumb to a mainstream sound.I just love Conya...love her voice...love her songs...LOVE her lyrics, which is a running theme through all 4 of her CDs, yes FOUR! If you're new to Conya, you will not be disappointed with this CD. I would also recommend picking up her Just Because CD (her 2nd release), which is my personal favorite of the 4. And if you happen to be able to pick up "A Poem for Ms. Doss", her debut, get that too! (Hopefully, you can get it at a reasonable price, but I think it's pretty hard to find these days.) Conya is SO SO SO great at writing and singing ballads I just can't explain. This woman truly has the ability to write about situations that we all can relate to - but it's not just that, she delivers the songs with such emotion, you can feel it. Almost every love song of hers reminds me of a personal experience of mine...I love songs that touch me like that. One thing I love about "still..." is that she is continuing to venture out with more uptempo songs like she did in her 3rd CD, "Love Rain Down". I love her ballads, but the variety of uptempo songs are definitely welcome. Fave tracks: Can't Stop What I'd Do Let Me Love You I Miss You Come Over How About Us If you've never heard of Conya, I would compare her almost to Mary J Blige, but without all the screaming that Mary can sometimes (often) do. And this comparison is not to say that Conya is trying to sound like Mary, it's just to give you a frame of reference of her voice, and style. She's more mellow, smooth, sensual, and groovy than Mary and that's what I love about her. Pick this up and be made happy :-)

Love the album. I think it's better than her previous releases. Great, mature, rhythm, blues, and soul like I think it should be, but I'm only one person. No mainstream club anthems, raps and hooks. Nevertheless, the album is smooth and Conya's voice is great. Check it out, enjoy it, and spread the word.

From the very day I received the CD, it has been in my car's CD rotation. I can't stop listening to it. The lyrics are off the chain and the music tracks are fresh and soulful. Conya's voice is soothing and she sings deeply about love. These are not silly love songs - this stuff is real and relative! Welcome Conya Doss. Music lovers and lyricists are glad you're here!

I had never heard of Conya Doss prior to purchasing STILL. I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised. Conya's vocals are on point, and the lyrics are so poetic. This is an album that I believe everyone can relate to, because each song describes a different stage in a relationship."Common Ground" is relating to a mature relationship going through problems, with the message about compromise. "Can't Stop" is a stepping groove relating to the emotional high we feel when we enter a relationship and everything is new and wonderful. "Something 2nite" is a disco groove relating to the stage of relationship where its got comfortable and the wining and dining has gone by the wayside. "What I'd Do" is one of my favorites. Poetic message about that love that has stolen your heart and brought heaven to your world. "Right On Time" speaks about the individual who has been through so much relationship drama, but just when they have given up... "I Miss You" captures the memories of a relationship that has ended where you realize that person was paramount, and you just wish they were back in your life. "Let Me Love You" is the love on hold, where the other person has had a bad experience, so they have a hard time trusting. "Message" is somewhat spiritual. Its reflecting on the fact that that special someone has been a rock in your life; they have encouraged you through difficult times and you just want to say 'thank you'. Thanks Conya, this album is the bomb!!

I am a big Conya Doss fan. Why must real music fans work so hard to hear good music nowadays? At any rate, I'm glad I searched and found Ms. Doss. This is the third CD I have purchased from her, and I have not been disappointed yet. My favorites are the ones she does with producer Rodney Jones. They seemed to have been in a real groove in the studio. My absolute favorite song on this project (one of my favorite ballads of this decade) is "What I'd Do". The lyrics (about undying love from a woman's point of view), melody and hook are really strong and she sings it with geniune feeling and emotion. I also really like "Can't Stop" and "Come Over". I enjoy the whole CD. Her voice and pitch are fresh like sitting outside listening to the sounds of spring. Enjoy!
