Hi
I have had this player for almost 3 months now and this is the first time something like this has occurred I was playing Stranger than fiction and the Disc jacket picture stays on the screen for a while while the player reads the disc or tries to and then the unit powers off automatically i have tried it on two different slots same thing .. i then put the dvd into my JVC and it played fine.
any suggestion on why this is happening is it because of the unit or is it just a fluke and i shouldn't worry ?

please help I am under warranty now would rather deal with problems now rather than later.

I have the same issue. Same movie, same player. I have netflix'd this movie twice thinking that it may be a bad disc, but both did exactly the same thing you describe.

I guess I cant watch it. :-(

wow thanks for replying you have saved me some worries ;) i thought it was the player giving me problems...maybe some others will respond with their experiences too...

I got a response from Sony - its a known problem with the new sony pictures copy protection scheme. The unit can be mailed in to Texas for service to make it compatible. Ill pass on that for now and wait and see if other movies become an issue (or stop watching sony movies)...

Hmmm yeah i don't know if i want to send it in for that this was the first sony title to do that. I will call though just to see how long it does take for doing then decide for sure ...thanks for posting

Same problem as BookWorm but different player. I have tried 3 different copies of the mpvie Stranger than fiction (from the same video store) and not one would get past the selection menue on my PC or my new Philips dvd player. Ive only had a problem like this once before with the movie Layer Cake. I looked it up and its a Sony Pictures movie too. So maybe this is a problem with the actual DVDs and not the players? Or maybe Sony and Philips DVD players are having the same problems.

Well it did play fine on my JVC player so i don't know what is going on ... i really hope it isn't the Sony Changer with the problems.
thanks for your input
Hope you get to watch the movie soon ...

I was so happy to see this problem was shared by others with this particular movie!! I, too, thought it was the player, because I was able to play the movie on my toshiba tv with dvd player. It would seem unlikely that is is the player because I have 250 movies in it and this is the ONLY one that was a problem.

I have the same problem with "The Holiday" and "Casino Royale" as well. Three movies I have paid for that will not play on my DVD player. All Sony. Pathetic.

In reply to an earlier post on Mar 14, 2007 11:30:06 AM PDT
"Casino Royale" does play in my Sony DVPCX995V player. You might have a different issue going on.

Won't play in the Toshiba SD4700 either. It says loading for a minute, then shuts off. (Nice going, Toshiba and Sony). It does play in my Magnavox player.

This isn't the first instance where this Toshiba has failed to play a DVD that plays fine in other units... way to go Toshiba, and thanks a lot.

L. Rankine says:
It's not just Toshiba. I've got a Harman Kardon DVD101 player and have experienced the same issue with Casino Royale. Returned the DVD three times with No Joy. It either shuts down the unit entirely or locks up the player and then I've got to turn it off, then on to get the disc out. This is a Sony issue and I've emailed them but received no response yet.

Doug,

Can you provide any additional details on Sony's response? I have had no luck with Sony Support.

I think it's something wrong with Stranger Than Fiction. We've gotten 2 copies from my Netflix, and both are defective in 2 of our DVD players, but the second one plays on 1 of our computers. It's weird, but I'm pretty sure it's the DVD's fault, and probably not your player.

I second the exact same problem that L Rankine is having, a Harman Kardon DVD101 player, Casio Royal, and the DVD player sometimes hangs and sometimes shuts off automatically. This is my second copy of Casio Royal and it's not the player, everything else plays in it fine. It's a SONY DVD problem. They are making a lot of people angry.

L. Rankine says:
For what its worth I did speak with Sony Pictures customer support. They assured me they were looking into the problem and also assured me I would be notified when a resolution is achieved. They took down my contact information as well as the technical information (DVD player type, DVD serial number, etc.). Time will tell. If anyone is interested I've still got their phone number. It's at my office so I'll attempt to post it here later today.

L. Rankine says:
Sony Pictures number is 800-860-2878. They will ask for the DVD serial number (it's REAL small around the center of the DVD) and the UPC off the case.

We just netflix'd Casino Royale. It will not play on the old (3 or 4 years) RCA player we have. It reads the disk, tries to load, and fails.
Thankfully, it will play on the Kmart special ($35) Memorex player we have in the gym, but what a pain! I would like to watch my movies from the couch, not from the floor in the basement!
I am very glad we did not buy this DVD, and it will go on the list of ones NOT TO BUY. I think I will NOT be buying new Sony dvds at all.

Hi All -

I just discovered the same issue. I have an Elan VIA!dvdj which controls a Sony 400DVD changer - Model DVP-CX777ES. Never had any trouble with the system recognizing (cataloging) and playing DVDs. So far, every new release I've gotten in the last month won't work:

Stranger Than Fiction
Casino Royale (disc 1 - bonus disc will play)
Blood Diamond
The Pursuit of Happyness
Eragon
The Holiday

and one of thems says "WarnerVideo" not Sony.

A real bummer but I'm doing some digging.

Trevor Keast says:
I have had the same problems as you guys are describing. I can't play:

Stranger Than Fiction
The Persuit of Happyness
The holiday
Open Season

They all just lock up the player, and when i try them on a second player in my house they lock that one up two. I have tried up to three different copies of some of these movies to no avail. It's obviously the player that does'nt like the disk because all my other movies play fine.

In reply to an earlier post on Apr 4, 2007 7:03:24 PM PDT
Bummer, I guess I can take "The Persuit of Happyness" off the netflix list. :-(
