Roku 2 XS can take a external hard drive. You can run files off your computer using a program call Plex using all the Roku models.

Any model Roku should be able to stream movies you have on your HD. You just need to install the "Plex" channel. Here are details: http://www.pcworld.com/article/256058/stream_media_from_your_pc_to_your_roku_box.html

Add the Plex channel/app from the channel store. Download the Plex Medias Client to your PC. Works flawlessly.

The roku player does not play movies from a hard drive only the applications like netflix or hulu plus and the channel store's applications. I wondered that myself.

No, the Roku only plays movies streamed from the Roku service in real time. There is no provision to play stored movies.
