I've been wonder this very same thing and thought I would provide a link to the article regarding not using the subwoofer port. I'm not sure if I understand it, but here it is :

Hey everyone,

I just purchased this system and wanted to jump in. I'm using the Sony STR-DG820 as my receiver and have SS-B1000 bookshelf speakers as my fronts. I bought this system to use as the remainder of a 7.1 channel setup. Polk seemed to recommend the setup that Schor talked about when using their satellites in the package as front speakers. Would anyone recommend this setup with the larger bookshelf speakers or would using the sub-out on the receiver be better? Any thoughts? Thanks

Nowhere in the article that you reference does it say that Polk recommends not using the subwoofer port. As a matter of fact, based on the article, the opposite appears to be preferred.
