My girlie is very interested in learning how to sew with a sewing machine. She is not afraid of a challenge so I think she would be open to non-kiddie machines. But I have no clue. I have never used a machine myself. So any input would be wonderful. Maybe I can learn along with her :)

I am teaching my kids and some of the other kids from school how to sew this summer. I've been looking for "the right" book, I loved this one. It's challenging yet very simple. Love the illustrations. Make sure you learn a tid about the sewing machine so that you know how to fix it if the thread breaks etc. Those things can be easy to fix yet could be frustrating for the kiddos. Good luck!
