This review is from: By sword and fire: The destruction of Manila in World War II, 3 February-3 March 1945
This is a great book detailing each day of the battle for Manila towards the end of World War II. This, however, is more than just a chronicle of the war, but more importantly, it views the war from the point of view of citizens swept in the torrent of events no one could ever comprehend: the cruelty, the savagery and the utter destruction that resulted from the "liberation" of Manila.

What distinguishes this book from others on the subject is that the author takes it upon himself to show to the readers a bit of the history of the Philippines and the various historic locales within Manila. This drives home to the reader the ENORMITY of what was lost, not only in terms of destruction of property and loss of lives, but also of a way of life for Manileños.

I have lived in Manila all my life, and this book showed me what was taken away by war in the place I call home.
