Este comentario es sobre la edición en español de Ed. Alfaguara. No he leído la versión en inglés. Este es uno de los mejores libros que he leído (ya sea de misterio o de otro tipo) por lo complicado de la trama, su excelente narración y el muy inesperado final. Todo comienza con una restauradora de arte que recibe un cuadro, el cual muestra a una pareja jugando al ajedrez, que será vendido en una subasta; y al limpiarlo, descubre una inscripción bajo una capa mas reciente de pintura. A continuación asesinan a su ex-novio y la única pista que se encuentra en la escena del crimen es una movida de ajedrez que continúa la partida del cuadro. La historia y la fantasía se mezclan maravillosamente en este libro, creando un ambiente de incertidumbre tan creible, que cuesta trabajo dejar de leer.

This review is for the book in spanish. I haven't read the english version. This is one of the best books I have read (mystery or other), because of it's plot twists, excellent writting (I hope that is the right word) and truly unexpected end. It all begins when a young restorer receives a painting portraying a couple playing a game of chess. She cleans the painting and finds a hidden message under a layer of paint. Next thing she knows, her ex-boyfriend is dead and the only clue left in the murder scene is a "chess move" that continues the game in her painting. History and fantasy blends in this book creating a sense of unease so strong that I couldn't keep from reading.

Es frecuente al leer, visualizar el libro, como si lo estuvieran proyectando mentalmente. Creo que esa fue la intención del autor. La narración es tan perfecta, las descripciones de los personajes, tan real y detallada, la trama es tan interesante y apasionada...que inevitablemente se siente todo el libro como si estuviese en un escenario. Excelente historia que combina el humor negro con crímenes, arte y el ingenio del ajedrez como única posibilidad para descubrir al asesino. Con una pintura flamenca y su ingenua restauradora comienza la acción que desencadenará un inesperado final.

Este libro es de los mejores que he leido en mi vida. Es apasionante. El autor derrocha imaginación a raudales, una obra de arte en mi opinión. Está muy bien escrito y la conexión entre la trama de la historia y los movimientos de ajedrez son de una belleza extraordinaria. La comunicación entre personajes muertos y los vivos a través de un cuadro antiguo es algo realmente genial.
