do roman shades roll up like blinds or does the length have to be the same as the window length. I have a standard width window but my length is 51". Would I have to buy a custom made shade?

Go to Home Depot, Loew's, or somewhere that they sell a lot of these. They'll tell you everything you need to know. They'll also, if you buy their's, send out someone to measure so its perfect, and they can install, or tell you how to if you're "handy".

I don't have Roman shades but have wide white wooden blinds I really like. They aren't room darkening but they're in the family room. I DON'T have curtains or toppers over them, I like the look of the simple white blinds.

In bedrooms I have room darkening cellular "type" window shades. The guaranteed room darkening ones only come in certain colors but that's ok, they really do make the room totally dark for someone who is a light sleeper or works shift work. And they're attractive. These btw are NOT the super expensive name-brand ones, nice as those are. These are a sort of house brand of one of the two places mentioned above. Got a 1 yr no interest deal, plus sale price, on them, paid them off by the time the yr was up so paid no interest....

I've had the two types of window coverings mentioned above several years and am very happy with them. No curtains anywhere (get dirty, grab dust, hide insect life, etc).

Thank you so much for all the information. I'll head to Lowe's this afternoon. Have a great day!

It's easy to "cheat" on the length of roman shades, as long as the width is what you want. The secret is that they'll never be completely lowered, and always somewhat "raised" to accommodate the extra length.
Bonne Chance!
