Check out the 1 star review for her book 'Her Highland Rogue' under the name DeborahAnne Macgillivray, it too claims previous reviews were deleted. Also check out the statistically impossible great reviews by the authors closely associated via the anthologies. I pulled some numbers out of concern, see below. I swear their must be a network of unethical authors trying to dupe Amazon and us readers. This is the kind of crap that can really hurt Amazon's business, so I hope they get proactive on this ring of abusers.
Her Highland Rogue

Compare the below stats to truly great books such as 'Lord of Scoundral', 'Outlander', and 'Flowers from the Storm', as well as truly popular romance authors such as Susan E Phillips, Julia Quinn, Judith McNaught and Lisa Kleypas, they can't compare to DM and her close knit of friends.

Well, the difference between all those good authors you mentioned and those of MacGillivray's ilk is that the former (and their fans) don't hound people who may give a less than stellar review (you know, all 4 or 5 star reviews). They are more secure in their writing and success. Every author had to start from the bottom, and every author will receive criticism as not everyone will like what they write.

Did it not occur to you that many of her reviews are the same people with different aliases? It isn't rocket science. It is a matter of deductive reasoning. I have it on very good authority.

In reply to an earlier post on Apr 6, 2008 5:40:55 PM PDT
I would not be surprised if that were the case.

Please do not be surprised AT ALL.

In reply to an earlier post on Apr 6, 2008 5:51:05 PM PDT
Yah...like I said, I'm not surprised.LOL. If they could stoop to getting negative reviews deleted, then they could write 5 star reviews under various Amazon accounts. Question is, why are they getting away with it?

Viv says:
Because who would call out one of the so-called 'top reviewers'? What good has it done for all of the Harriet Klausner naysayers? Nada. The thing is HK is relatively harmless whereas DM is sabotaging reviews. *tsk tsk* Shame on her. How long do you reckon it will take before this thread goes *poof*?

Groovy says:
Don't think that HK is "harmless"... I just stumbled across this controversy. You do realize that she receives payment for these - up to 50 free books a day according to the Time magazine article about her. In essence, she is a paid reviewer but does not identify herself as such and as she has never given a review lower than 4, I suspect there is more than just free books involved. Assume that each book is 5 dollars (most are probably more than that). That is $250 dollars worth of merchandise a day. She could return those books to a bookstore, and get "money back" for them. $250 per day... assume that is just on business days. So, $1250 per week. There are 52 weeks a year. Lets subtract 10 days, for a "2 week vacation" to account for holidays, etc. $1,250 times 50 is $62,500 a year. It would be very easy to make that "tax free".

Romance Fan:

Thanks for the link to Leanne Burrough's '5 star' book. Did you notice that all the main 5 star reviewers for that particular book had 2 reviews a piece up? How did they double review for the same book?

Here is the link again:

I don't remember the book, but I remember seeing a HK review quoted in the inside alongside actual authors and magazine reviewers to show how favorable the book was considered. I almost returned the book to the store!!

At http://dearauthor.com/ they have posted other information concerning Deborah MacGillivray and her publisher along with the info that she uses a Yahoo Group list to change her Amazon reviews. For those that are interested...

Karlyn says:
Wow, thanks for posting Krista! I didn't realize DM was actually her own publicist at Highland Press. I wonder what they can do about her actions, as they had to have grossly violated Amazon agreements as well as the RWA members agreements. Her books should be removed from Amazon (or maybe all her negative reviews re-instated if they are archivable, which I doubt), and her membership with RWA should be revoked. This is the kind of press that can really hurt both Amazon and the industry.

Viv says:
Krista, I have known this as well, ie the Highland Press. Also, many are friends from RIO (Reviewers International Organization) of which she is a board member as well as writes for. What I think is extremely brazen as well as unfair is her RIO win for "A Restless Knight" when she was quite possibly chairing the event!

Ladies it is only a matter of a little digging to discover the connections here. It took all of an hour between HP, RIO, and Amazon. The same reviewers, be they real or fictitious, write stellar reviews for all of her books as well as her late friend Dawn Thompson/McTavish. Look for yourself. Check her Amazon profile.

Krista says:
No problem, Romance Fan.

I have personally never read anything by MacGillivray and now after reading everyone's comments here plus a few from the author herself (where she told a reader/reviewer (I'm parapharasing) they had missed one of the points in her book and were perhaps not paying attention to the book while they read) that I will never pick one up now.

If an author needs a group of people to kill negative reviews and verbally attack people that didn't *LOVE* their book then I personally have no interest in supporting that author.

Krista,

Thanks for the info. I did not know about that either. I knew that she had some friends/fans writing 5 star reviews to boost her book ratings on Amazon, but I didn't know about the other that. Eventually, this author's actions and behavior will come around and bite her back on the a#%. The more people that know, the better. I just hope this author realizes she's only harming herself and her writing career by stooping to these kinds of behaviors.

The Amazing Tales of Wildcat Arrows

This thread made me go check Dara Joy's "Wildcat Arrows" and yes, for the THIRD time they have deleted ALL the reviews except for one positive. I mean there were 35 single star reviews at one point. This is just frickin' wrong!

I mean, the book is awful! Deal with it.

Is the author, Dara Joy, doing the same thing MacGillivray did? I just checked, and that's insane. It's not like that book is available new through Amazon (and even if it were, still not right!) so what's the deal? =P

E. Burns says:
I don't know what DJ is doing. What I do know is that her last two 'self published' books were a disaster on so many levels---from fans pre-paying and having to badger and threaten to get their books to the books just being mind numbingly awful.

Now this BS silly stuff of dozens and dozens of negative reviews being pulled repeatedly. It's morally reprehensible!

C. Vowels says:
Wow, Reba. I'd seen bits of your story before, but the thing about them making references to your family are just way beyond the pale. I'm glad you advocated for yourself and went to the authorities.

I've been watching a lot of these deletion discussions on the board with disgust, but slight amusement, that people would go so far to keep negative user reviews from being posted. Really, though, your analogy of the digital camera triggered a different line of reasoning. If this were a major corporation manipulating reviews and information about a product it expected consumers to pay for, people would be up in arms. Investigations would be launched. I think because this is so clearly on a small scale we aren't taking it quite as seriously as we would in other circumstances.

Wish that these people who are so concerned about authors starving to death would stop for a moment and realize that most readers aren't exactly rolling in it either. Most of us have strict budgets for literature. Wish they could see the plain truth that the food that goes in their mouths comes either from our own mouths, or the mouths of other authors. What about the reader's starving puppy?

How can she possibly think this stuff won't catch up to her? The people she aims at have computers, too.

Reba,

I don't think you should let their behavior and actions dictate your own. Don't let them stop you from posting reviews.
