So in the wake of BioShock Infinite's controversial cover art, many people are directing their criticism towards its inability to properly reflect what the game's experience will end up being (granted, we haven't played it yet, but judging from the cover you'd probably make the case that it hits a little to close to matching the generic video games we all are too familiar with). DVvM showed me this well written article on the subject matter, so read it if you're interested in the controversy.

So, to you, what box art ended up doing the same thing the cover for Infinite is doing for certain fans of the series? First, the American Ico cover is horrendous. That's a given, especially since it looks like a terrible children's cartoon. The European cover, done in the style of an actual surrealist painter, is the essential representation.

I also think the Metro 2033 cover made the game look like a boring, generic action game, when it was anything but.

Isn't the box art the sky with the Bioshock Infinite banner on it? Or did they change it to something stupid?

They revealed the cover today. It's been getting a lot of ^&*(

DVvM says:
I'm not somebody who buys games based on their box art (not books based on their cover) so I can't say that box art has ever affected my decision to buy (or not buy) a game.

But that's not to say that there aren't people who judge games (or books) by their covers. Sending the message that your game is just like every other game, by aping every other box art style, isn't necessarily the way to make your game stand out to these folks.

The recent Fuse one's pretty terrible.

Not only is the name generic like Haze, its about as interesting aesthetically speaking.

I liked Fuse a lot more when it was Overstrike.

I wouldn't have bought it even then (since it's core appeal is co-op shooting, which isn't something I like at all), but I approved of it more back then.

Same. I find everything about Fuse completely uninteresting.

Also, another bad one:

What a mess.

In reply to an earlier post on Dec 1, 2012 2:06:51 PM PST
That wasn't all that bad...

The Batman:AC GotY art is some of the tackiest cover art of all time.

I'm gonna disagree there. It's plastered with crap.

Also, here's another, this one's hilarious:

That's pretty silly...

This isn't new. Gamers have been complaining about Box Art for a long time.

See, for example:

(That's my personal favorite box art.)

Wait a second....

OK, that's awesome. How can anyone hate that?

I remember seeing that one in the store when I was a kid. I was always really confused by it, but I always remembered it.

It's not a very interesting cover, but its not terrible.

It's not as bad as the RE 6 subliminal giraffe giving someone oral pleasure cover.

This topic is rather stupid in my opinion, especially the Kotaku piece attempting to make something out of nothing. Sure the cover art may not be the best but one of the great things about cover art is that you can turn the case over and see all sorts of details on the back of the case ranging from screenshots from the game, a brief run down of the story, and maybe some highlights about what sets this apart from other titles.

In today's world where internet is king cover art doesn't mean squat. Bioshock: Infinite knows who its target audience is and knows they've been paying attention to the game for some time. When you've got trailers like this:

Who the heck cares about cover art? I mean seriously of all the nit picky things to whine about this has to be the most pointless I've seen in some time. Hell when I buy a game I bring it home, the disc goes into my system, and the case goes up on the shelf, and I typically never look at the cover art again because when I'm switching games I just pull the case down, open it right up, and pop the game back in without much thought.

People the year is 2012, almost 2013 now, this isn't the 80's or 90's when games had to catch your eye with their fancy cover art which had to give you details about the game right then and there.

I means seriously go pull some games off your shelf and take a look at them. I'm looking at Skyrim right now and all it has is the title "Elder Scrolls V - Skyrim" and then the dragon emblem underneath it. That's it. No characters. No magic. No mountains. No battles. No Stormcloaks or Imperials. No Giants. No Dragonborn. No dragons. If we're going to start scrutinizing Bioshock Infinite then let's start doing it to all games because all games of this are guilty in some form or another.

I think we need games to overdo it like the 70s and 80s, like Star Wars with the buffed out Luke and the sexy possed leia.

Hey, in the end, I don't make my end buying decision based on the box art.

HOWEVER, I enjoy box art, what's wrong with that? I think it's cool when box art matches the tone of the game. Sometimes it doesn't.

I think the borderlands cover art is terrible. It did stop me from buying the game for a good while.

There's nothing wrong with enjoying box art but acting like this is some sort of slight against the game or anything like that is just ridiculous. It's box art and nothing more. Would I have preferred to have seen something more unique and original? Sure I would but that doesn't make this an issue that needs to be addressed or that this is something that plaguing games.

I'm just finding it funny that Bioshock Infinite is catching flak for this when games constantly have covers which don't tell you squat about the game as I pointed out with Skyrim. Ever take a look at Deus Ex: Human Revolution's box art? It just has Adam Jensen, the main character, holding a gun and the title of the game. No augments, no open environments, no stealth, branching paths, or anything else that is in the game. So again why is it suddenly a big deal that Bioshock Infinite has a less than stellar box art?

The answer: it's not. People will be disappointed, the game is still going to release, it is still going to be awesome, and the cover art will long be forgotten about in no time.

DVvM says:
I think Bioshock Infinite's box art is mostly just jarring because Bioshock 1 and 2 did not have bad box art.

If they had just put the Songbird on the Bioshock Infinite cover, like they put Big Daddy on the other two covers, that would be fine.

But "Scruffy guy on cover, chin down, eyes up, holding gun" is like the most generic thing you can do on a video game cover. It's especially jarring since the Protagonist is perhaps the least interesting thing about Bioshock: Infinite.

chin down, eyes up. Eyes down, chin up is more of a generic hip hop album cover thing.

You're right, I had that backwards. I will edit.

Oh my god, the RE6 cover DOES look like a giraffe facef__ng someone! It's like a Rorschach image, or the nonsensical-looking black dots on white that's actually a dalmatian. It can never be unseen.
