More About the Author

I grew up in West Hampstead, London, in the 50's. My love affair with horses started when I was three - with George, the milkman's horse, Johnny - or was it the other way round? I loved his smell, his nosebag and the fact he left great piles of pooh in West End Lane - and so did the horse. After doing a psychology degree, I went into advertising, fulfilled the impossible dream and took up riding as a sport, then in the 80's retrained as an executive coach, so I could transform the madmen.

In the early 90's, I had a life-changing experience riding a horse and 'Horse-Assisted Transformation' was born. I soon discovered the 'natural horsemanship movement' and it became a perfect model for my burgeoning appreciation of how powerful it is for clients to experience a skilled coaching session alongside a horse.

Despite my unbridled success in this field I remain, humble and modest. So it's with great difficulty that I say, I defy anyone to come close to the clarity of the theoretical model I developed, the depth of penetrating insight I deliver with my horses, the caring and support I give my clients, the boldness of the possibility you'll be awakened to in a very short time.

The first two-thirds of this book contain a somewhat rambling, often personal, sometimes humorous philosophical stream of consciousness about truth with a capital T, horses as teachers and mirrors, the Bible as metaphor, and other provocative ideas about who we are as souls and beings. Despite the rambling, this is valuable "thinking out loud" triggered by the idea that "For thousands of years, excellence in horsemanship was such a natural ingredient in the development of leadership it would hardly have been noticed--and only rarely noted." In the last third of this book, Hunting does an exceptional job of laying out his method of "Transformational Horsemanship." His willingness to be candid and explicit about how he works with his horses to help clients become more authentically present and self aware in their leadership roles results in a very useful, informative, and thought-provoking discussion.

I'd recommend, however, that in any book suggesting methods of working with horses, the safety of the person and of the horse get more attention. The need for knowledge, awareness, and prudence when close to horses cannot be overstated.

This heartfelt, authentic explanation of why horses are such wonderful partners in learning, has been a delight to read. I would recommend it for anyone who may be curious about why so many people are choosing to work with horses to learn more about themselves. The world needs the type of knowledge that horses are masters at teaching.
