Excerpt: ... PREPARATION FOR ENTERING THE KINGDOM CHAPTER XX COUNTING THE COST Here is a single short chapter distinguished as Part VI of this book. The reason for this is to be found in the fact that the analysis of the book requires it. The subject is vastly more important than its short treatment here would indicate. This, however, is not the place for a more extended consideration of it, as the parables themselves are short and easily understood; and we are here concerned, not with the general discussion of a theme, but with the teaching of the parable. The cost of following Christ, being a Christian, is so very great that Jesus thought best, anxious as he was to have all men follow him, to warn them of it, so that there could not be any excuse later for turning back. This warning is given directly, in the verses just preceding the parables. Those who would become Christians must be willing to give up the first place in their hearts and lives to Christ. "And there went great multitudes with him: and he turned, and said unto them, If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple." Luke 14:25-26. Only a word of explanation is needed, and that is regarding the word "hate." It is used to make emphatic the fact that whoever would become a follower of Christ must give him the very first place. Not only must there be the willingness to give up the first place, but there must be also the willingness to suffer for the cause of Christ. Here follows the statement of Christ: "And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple." Luke 14:27. To bear the cross means to suffer anything that may be necessary in order to be perfectly loyal ...
