In what has now become a landmark study, David Gies examines (in great detail) Spanish theatre of the nineteenth century. Traditionally glossed over by scholars and the public, this period when presented by Gies yields a fascinating amount of information. The path from late neoclassical to Romantic to Bourgeois and finally realist theater is a unique and byzantine one, yet the author manages to present the information in an easily digested, yet never condescending, fashion. This is a must have for any Spanish scholar or 19th century expert. There is also an English translation available for those who don't read Spanish.
