Freedom, space, sunlight, high literacy rates, cheap technology, free time? Does abundance just cause a certain %age of people to go nutters? I mean, yes, hobbies are good, and we are social animals, and conspiracy theorizing is a great social hobby, and keeps these people occupied ... but then there is the proselytizing. It drives them to want to make new converts. And crave recognition of their "insight"
Do America's blessings and freedoms engender mass delusions? Yes, no?
Is America any "nuttier" than other countries? Any countries "nuttier"? Which ones? Compare and contrast.
During the 19th Century we had the "Know Nothings" (I guess they are still with us - witness Dr. Corsi's fans) and the "MugWumps" and the rest on the fringe. When the open marketplace of ideas encourages all comers, it's going to attract everybody. Kind of like a topless beach.
Oh, I know it's not knew, the Know Nothings are an all time classic. Just idle speculation about whether or not this is another manifestation of American Exceptionalism, or if we are actually on hte short side of a Nuttiness Gap.
