I know very little about anime, except that I don't like most of what I've seen. GHOST IN THE SHELL II though is a different story. It's one of the greatest, most visionary films I've ever seen. Can any anime fiends out there tell give me their picks for best anime ever?
Some of my picks are for series that were by Geneon, but alot from ADV but possibly rare.
1.Gunsmith Cats - 3 Episode OVA - ADV Films - Action Packed 2.Ergo Proxy - 26 Episode TV - Geneon - Slow paced but decent 3.Daphne in the Brilliant Blue - 26 Episode TV - Geneon - Fanservice but other than that its good 4.Ninja Scroll - Manga Entertainment - Pretty good movie 5.Requiem From The Darkness - 13 Episode TV - Geneon - Thriller 6.Read or Die TV and OVA - 26 Episode TV and 3 Episode OVA - Really good
I would say more but these are not close to your liking... I have seen alot of them but I hope these help... sadly most of them are rare now...
I have the same feelings about anime, but there are some very good ones out there. If you haven't seen the first Ghost in the Shell you should watch that, its vastly superior to the second in my opinion. Akira is also very well written and widely liked even by people who don't typically like anime. Any movie directed by Hayao Miyazaki is always a good watch, i would recommend first watching Spirited Away, then if you like that watch Princess Mononoke, and Howls Moving Castle. A really good anime series to watch is Cowboy Bebop, the storylines are heavily influenced by western cinema and culture and the whole series is very artfully done for the most part. i hope that helps.
well obviously go watch the two ghost shell series
i'm assuming you're calling the other anime corny so i suggest neon genesis evangelion noein (might be just a tad on the "corny" side) appleseed (appleseed anything, i think there's 2 movies) planet es (this leans towards older styles of animation) samurai 7 (the anime series, not the movie which it's based on)
There's alot of good Anime out there for a variety of tastes. If you like very "visionary" films (i sure do) you should check out work from Studio 4C. There's not too much officially available from them in the states, but you could start with Tekkon Kinkreet:
You might also enjoy Memories, an omnibus of 3 films by 3 very good directors: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WgPS2wRhFxM
This studio has done other great films that you can either import or download. Here are some of my favorites:
Kemenozume: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J3AvlxZBMXU This is technically a TV show. It'll probably never be released in the States. It is a very artsy story made on a tiny budget with very experimental animation and very very good writing with very well developed characters and an unusually great script (especially for TV).
If you want Visionary, then you also must see Genius Party Beyond: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qPYnzVdY2Q0 This is another omnibus collection of films. The idea was to get directors with very unique styles and let them do whatever the hell they wanted. The results are stunning. There's actually 2 sets of films, both great, but if you only have time for 1, see the second set, Genius Party Beyond.
You can read more about it here: http://www.cartoonbrew.com/anime/genius-party.html There's a great discussion that occurs in the feedback section.
If you really want to learn more about very unique, very compelling, very honestly artistic anime, then I highly recommend this website:
http://www.pelleas.net/aniTOP/ It's the best website in the english language regarding cutting edge Japanese (and other) animation.
I hope you'll give these links some thought, because there's a wealth of great stuff coming from the Japanese animation industry that you might otherwise never hear of. It's great, beautiful, uplifting stuff. Check it out!
