Product Description

Our Signature Sound on a Whole New Level

The On1 supra-aural monitor features accurate, professional studio monitor sound and imaging. It is a transparent headphone that lets you hear and feel your music the way the artist intended it. The On1's have great top and extension, a lush midrange, and no real emphasis on any specific frequency range.

The Sound

The On1 features an enhanced 40mm speaker driver. The drivers are engineered for more accurate sound reproduction and create an expansive sound stage. The sound produced is engaging, immersive, and full of detail.

The Fit

The On1 headphones feature luxurious memory foam ear pads and a flexible headband for extra comfort.

The Finish

The first thing you'll notice about the On1 is the beautiful finish on the solid wood ear cups, but the attention to detail doesn't stop there. The On1 are beautifully constructed, with a look that is grown up and self-assured and an audio quality to match.

The Difference

thinksound headphones are designed and engineered to sound amazing while making a limited environmental impact. The earpieces are made of real wood from renewable sources, and all of our cables are PVC-free. Our packaging is compact and created from recycled materials, eliminating any hard to open, ubiquitous plastic bubbles.

Design and Build Quality

Aesthetics
I've had a few people over my house recently where they've seen my wall of headphones and one thing that has been remarked is that the thinksound On1 look very nice. This praise has been without any attention given to the headphones on my part, these stand out on their own. I find that the On1 are eye catching headphones as well, after all there aren't many wooden portable headphones! The uniqueness of the wood will certainly draw up conversation.

Build Quality
When I first looked at the On1 I doubted their build quality, notably in the headband region. The headband is thin and looks rather cheap and fragile. I then gave a look at the documents provided to me and found a letter with some pictures. The letter seemed to indicate that they are aware that the On1 look fragile, but included were pictures of the On1 with the headband contorted in a few stressful positions with no harm done. I gave this a try and sure enough the top of the headband can take some twisting with no harm.

The time had finally come for me to invest a little more dough in my audio chain. I had been drooling over an amp from ALO Audio for months but I knew that before I bought the amp I would need to get a great pair of headphones. I took my time to research which ones would be good and I had settled around the $300 mark for my headphone budget.

There is some stiff competition in this range from the likes of Beyerdynamic, AKG, Sennheiser, Grado, and many others. I knew it would be difficult to decide so I turned to the forums over at Head-Fi. There is a lot of great information on those forums. Late last year Head-Fi put out a gift guide. I referred to it when beginning my search.

I was looking for a closed-back, portable, comfortable, handsome, and great sounding pair of cans.

I read through the guide and found the usual suspects. But there were some I had never heard of. One of these unknowns was the On1's. They seemed to tick all the boxes and even came in under budget.

I had never heard of Thinksound before so I decided to do some research. I found some reviews. They had high praise for the On1's, but they had a couple of criticisms. The criticisms made me question if the On1's would be the best for me.

I'll address the two points of concern I had after reading the reviews when deciding whether or not to buy the On1's. Otherwise, this review would be nothing but a couple of paragraphs of me gushing over these headphones.

I'll say this once and get it out of the way: The Thinksound On1's are amazing.

Now, here are the two points of concern I had before getting them:

1. Build Quality

A number of the On1 reviews praise the build quality.

Verified Purchase
I received the ON1's from my wife for Valentine's Day. She knows how much I appreciate good quality sound reproduction. The ON1's have excellent no doubt and don't require amplification to sound good.

I used the headphones for less than 2 hours total use over the course of the last 3 weeks. This evening, like normal, I removed them from their case and slipped them on my head. There is a rectangular plastic piece on the headband located right at the junction where the headband metal sliders enters it's enclosure. It immediately snapped. I immediately thought nothing of it because I had applied zero force putting them on my head and I assumed some part came off that allowed their disassembly. Had they cost $50, I'have been certain that they immediately broke.

The sad part is how easily they snapped without twisting or bending them at all. My fear for other (large-headed) individuals is that they must easily break at full extension. Unfortunately for $250, it is just not worth the risk. Had they lasted 2 years or more and then broke it'd be a different story, so I will be returning them not exchanging them. 3 weeks is just not acceptable. Furthermore if I exchanged them, I know I'd have to be super careful so they wouldn't break again, and the websites warranty and repair policy doesn't sound too friendly. I'd fear an unreasonable response that this doesn't fall under manufacturers defect. However I never sought out warranty coverage so I can't say for sure how they'd respond.

The excellent sound and fabric extension cable earned them 3 stars, but I cannot look past the build quality. I would also take a look into the wood as it didn't even feel or look like wood to me.

Gauging the product as a whole, they definitely are making money at $250, because they simply skimped on build material. The speakers are studio quality, the headphones are not.
