Product Description

Our Signature Sound on a Whole New Level

The On1 supra-aural monitor features accurate, professional studio monitor sound and imaging. It is a transparent headphone that lets you hear and feel your music the way the artist intended it. The On1's have great top and extension, a lush midrange, and no real emphasis on any specific frequency range.

The Sound

The On1 features an enhanced 40mm speaker driver. The drivers are engineered for more accurate sound reproduction and create an expansive sound stage. The sound produced is engaging, immersive, and full of detail.

The Fit

The On1 headphones feature luxurious memory foam ear pads and a flexible headband for extra comfort.

The Finish

The first thing you'll notice about the On1 is the beautiful finish on the solid wood ear cups, but the attention to detail doesn't stop there. The On1 are beautifully constructed, with a look that is grown up and self-assured and an audio quality to match.

The Difference

thinksound headphones are designed and engineered to sound amazing while making a limited environmental impact. The earpieces are made of real wood from renewable sources, and all of our cables are PVC-free. Our packaging is compact and created from recycled materials, eliminating any hard to open, ubiquitous plastic bubbles.

I love these headphones, I appreciated the fast replacement, the great customer service.

I found these to be equal to our better than done if the best headphones coming from the likes of Bose, Sennheiser, and the Dre series.
Black Sabbath - Iron Man (Classic Rock): Very good instrumental detail and the vocal sounds very natural.

Pros: Environmentally conscious, wood housings, great isolation, removable cable, lightweight, clean sound, good instrument separation, good level of detail.
Cons: Soundstage can seem congested at times, can come off sibilant with Magni, mid-bass can come off as pushy.
Style: Full-sized, supra-aural.
Tonal Balance: Neutral with a slight warmth
Preferred Genres: Progressive rock, jazz, synth pop
Stand-Out Tracks: The Mars Volta - Cicatriz ESP, Wes Montgomery - California Dreaming, Passion Pit - Carried Away
Preferred Amp: Asgard 2
Listening Set-Up: Musicbee -> Schiit Modi -> Schiit Magni/Asgard 2

Design and Build Quality

I've had a few people over my house recently where they've seen my wall of headphones and one thing that has been remarked is that the thinksound On1 look very nice. This praise has been without any attention given to the headphones on my part, these stand out on their own. I find that the On1 are eye catching headphones as well, after all there aren't many wooden portable headphones! The uniqueness of the wood will certainly draw up conversation.

Build Quality
When I first looked at the On1 I doubted their build quality, notably in the headband region. The headband is thin and looks rather cheap and fragile. I then gave a look at the documents provided to me and found a letter with some pictures. The letter seemed to indicate that they are aware that the On1 look fragile, but included were pictures of the On1 with the headband contorted in a few stressful positions with no harm done. I gave this a try and sure enough the top of the headband can take some twisting with no harm.

Sound: These sound incredible for music with wooden instruments or vocals. Acoustic guitar, string quartets, piano trios, bossa nova all sound amazing with realistic instrument timbre. For example, you can almost feel the bow of a violin dragged across the strings. They also do a great job conveying space, both between instruments (separation) and sound stage. Well balanced between bass - mids - highs but plenty of bass for bass heavy music unless you're a complete bass head. The one thing they don't do as well is convey bite for metallic sounding instruments. Distorted electric guitars, saxophones and trumpets don't quite get the sharpness needed to convey realistic timbre. Overall however these are excellent sounding headphones.

Comfort: On ears, so there's some inherent limitations, but after they stretch out for a few days on your head they can be worn for hours. Very soft pads.

Build quality: The part that broke on my old pair of these was previously made of plastic but is now made of metal. As a result of this improvement, the build quality feels solid.

Summary: Great mix of audiophile realism with a musical, fun sound; especially good for wooden instruments and vocals; comfortable for on ears; solid build quality with update.

Note: The first pair of these I got broke very quickly and I gave it a poor review based on build quality alone. However since then Thinksound has upgraded the part that was breaking on some older pairs and the build quality appears to be good now. This amended review is for the new batch of headphones with the improved part. I should also mention Thinksound's great customer service.

The time had finally come for me to invest a little more dough in my audio chain. I had been drooling over an amp from ALO Audio for months but I knew that before I bought the amp I would need to get a great pair of headphones. I took my time to research which ones would be good and I had settled around the $300 mark for my headphone budget.

There is some stiff competition in this range from the likes of Beyerdynamic, AKG, Sennheiser, Grado, and many others. I knew it would be difficult to decide so I turned to the forums over at Head-Fi. There is a lot of great information on those forums. Late last year Head-Fi put out a gift guide. I referred to it when beginning my search.

I was looking for a closed-back, portable, comfortable, handsome, and great sounding pair of cans.

I read through the guide and found the usual suspects. But there were some I had never heard of. One of these unknowns was the On1's. They seemed to tick all the boxes and even came in under budget.

I had never heard of Thinksound before so I decided to do some research. I found some reviews. They had high praise for the On1's, but they had a couple of criticisms. The criticisms made me question if the On1's would be the best for me.

I'll address the two points of concern I had after reading the reviews when deciding whether or not to buy the On1's. Otherwise, this review would be nothing but a couple of paragraphs of me gushing over these headphones.

I'll say this once and get it out of the way: The Thinksound On1's are amazing.

Now, here are the two points of concern I had before getting them:

1. Build Quality

A number of the On1 reviews praise the build quality.
