2.0 out of 5 stars The Cliff Notes Version of the Sullivan Story from a Really Bad Writer, March 15, 2009
This poorly-written book is supposed to be the "story" of the Ed Sullivan TV show. It reads like a bad college term paper, skipping huge chunks of the history of the program, telling half-stories, and avoiding any narrative that could make sense of Sullivan

The writer doesn't let facts get in the way of his opinion--so a number of times he will state conclusions that he has no facts to back up. Throughout the book he also will start to mention something, then say that he's getting ahead of himself (even doing it twice in one page!). He also supposedly has divided the book into years, but then breaks that categorization--for example, a 1960s Woody Allen appearance is discussed in the 1952 to 1955 chapter

The reader comes away confused because there are times when Sullivan is a genius leader and other times when he's a bigoted idiot. Others involved with the series want to take credit for it but the author never introduces facts that would support or deny those conclusions.

If this is meant to be a tribute to Sullivan, it completely fails. If it's meant to be an historic overview of the series, it doesn't even come close. Namely, due to a terrible writer, the curtain comes down quickly.
