Book Description

October 10, 2008
Jason Mraz is a Singer/SongSurfer, by his own admission. His albums are sold and shared all over the world. Those songs and sharings have led Jason to a life of constant travelling. However, he never leaves his San Diego home without his trusty, vintage Polaroid camera. We say vintage because they don t make them like they use to; in fact, they don t make them at all anymore. But Jason loves the analog approach to photography, recording the moment with little to no chance of going back for another shot or correcting the color later in some software program. As these photos collected in shoe boxes, Jason was encouraged by his good friend Graham Nash to put them into a collection before they faded away (inherent in the Polaroid process). That collection, a thousand things, became available in October, 2008. The book, which includes a forward from Graham Nash, offers 54 Jason Mraz original photographs, including several self-portraits, as well as sunrises and sunsets, interiors and exteriors, pastorals and seascapes, hotel rooms and terminals, buildings and food, as well as some dogs and stuffed lions, with some bright and some obscured, some sharp and some blurry and all taken with the poetic and sardonic eye of Jason Mraz. All of the photographs were taken on a stock, classic Polaroid camera with "film that you might have found at your local drug or general store," as Jason s reveals in the book's liner notes. "None of the pictures in this collection have been altered or modified after they were ejected from the camera," Jason continues. "Any streaks, scratches or double exposures are just some of the accidental beauty marks that lure me into this brand of instant photography." In accordance with Jason's wishes, the book was printed on FSC & ISO certified woodfree paper. The cover stock is FSC certified as well, fully recyclable and chlorine free. All printing was done with soy-based inks. Only environmentally harmless glues was used in the binding process. All printing films, plates and waste paper were recycled. The book is intended to be a reflection of Jason's world through a refracted lens and a testimonial to a great piece of American invention, the Polaroid Instant Camera.

Editorial Reviews

About the Author

Jason Mraz left his Virginia hometown right after high school and struck out for New York City to find his fame and fortune. Honing his skills by busking on the streets in the Big Apple, Jason decided that perhaps this line of work could be performed in a nicer climate. Next stop: San Diego, and soon Jason moved from the outdoor beachside stages to inside a local hot spot called Java Joe's. It was there he met percussionist/vocalist Toca Rivera and the two made a name for themselves all along the California coast, garnering the attention of LA-based major record labels. His first release on Elektra, Waiting For My Rocket To Come , was released in November 2002, blending Mraz's early influences and coming-of-age sensibilities with country, roots rock, the poeticism of coffeehouse folk, elements of jazz, and hip-hop's rhythmic charge. The album sold platinum and led to Jason's second release, this time on sister label Atlantic, the Grammy-nominated Mr. A-Z , which debuted at #5, and featured the hit single Wordplay. For his all-important third album, Jason traveled to England to work with producer Martin Terefe, best known for his work with Coldplay and James Morrison (who guests on the intricate Details in the Fabric ). Terefe, along with songwriter/pianist Sacha Skarbek (who co-wrote James Blunt's You're Beautiful ), also played a hand in co-writing some of the tunes with Mraz. The result is We Sing. We Dance. We Steal Things. , his most self-assured effort to date. In true Mraz style, the 12 tunes are wrapped in clever, observant lyrics and strong, engaging pop melodies, but this time they are inspired by these moments of self realization, self empowerment and self improvement . Highlights include first single, I'm Yours, a warm breeze of a song about finally giving in to love and life's possibilities, set to a lilting island tempo. Another highlight is Lucky, a simple, endearing duet with new platinum singer-songwriter Colbie Caillat. We Sing. We Dance. We Steal Things. debuted on the charts at #3 in May 2008. I'm Yours shot to #1 at the AAA and Hot A/C radio formats and is Top10 in the Pop charts as of November 1, 2008. In his spare time, Jason is an avid photographer in the unlikely realm of Polaroids. A book of 50 of his unretouched and non-photoshopped photos entitled "a thousand things" was released in October 2008 and has spread the word about this multi-talented artist to the world of galleries and bookstores. Jason is the consummate musical and visual artist of the new century.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, everyday things, January 6, 2009
This review is from: a thousand things - - an eco-friendly and inspirational polaroid travelogue of music and people (Hardcover)
Those who know Jason Mraz know he just wants to share. He'll play a concert in someone's backyard if he has an audience - no matter how large or small. He's shared his music for years, now we get to see through his eyes with his book of Polaroids. I love it. Each photo is beautiful and interesting in its own way, untouched, documenting that moment no matter what "beauty marks." No text or captions to read. Just look and let your imagination drift. Just slow down and enjoy, that's the point. I love this book! On top of that, it's a completely environmentally-friendly product (I work in publishing, that is no small feat) Which, if you know Jason's morals, makes sense. I love this book and am so glad Mr. Mraz shared his shoebox full of polaroids with all of us.

This review is from: a thousand things - - an eco-friendly and inspirational polaroid travelogue of music and people (Hardcover)
A Thousand Things arrived very promptly and in great condition. The only way I'd be happier is if Jason Mraz delivered it himself.
5 Stars.
