3.0 out of 5 stars Not their best, but better than most of what's out there!
I was a little disappointed with this CD. Hard to really grill it because they're truly a LIVE band and to be experienced LIVE to "understand" them (I've seen 'em only five times, but was FLOORED by every show). It's not bad...but I think No Doy and Headseed are better representations of what they're really "like". This CD is "easier on the...

moe. is an extremely talented and versatile band. Their music brings together many influences yet they are forging a distinctive sound. The way they go about their business is reminiscent of The Grateful Dead as they allow tapers at their shows and free trading of their music. Listening to moe. one is reminded of great classic rock from Pink Floyd to Steely Dan as well as groups like (early) Pretenders. Frank Zappa and other more fringe(for lack of a better word) artists have found their way into moe.'s identifiable sound. Tin Cans and Car Tires is a solid collection of songs with cohesion. Plane Crash and Happy Hour Hero would have been album rock classics in another era. With a little luck and more exposure moe. can goe as far they want. Check out "no doy" and "headseed" as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars An amazing album., July 24, 2004

Moe. is one of the few bands out there today that actually create music with depth to it without crossing the (quite boring) artsy line. Some are turned off by Jam Bands (i.e. The Grateful Dead, Phish, etc.) due to the fact they seem to overindulge, and I'm hard pressed to disagree. However, Moe. defies that image, making the solos and instrumental tracks just long enough to be appreciated, but not too long that they become boring.

All of that aside, I found "Tin cans..." to be Moe.'s strongest effort, a unique blend of rock, country, bluegrass, the list goes on and on. With a rhythym section as tight as ever and amazing guitar playing to match it truely stands out.

Highly recommended to fans of Phish, Dispatch and good music in general.

5.0 out of 5 stars moe's finest......so far...., July 25, 2004
This review is from: tin cans & car tires (Audio CD)
ah, it was the summer of '99, and as far as summers go, this was a good one. Tin Cans... became the disc of choice for the long summer days and nights, and, whenever I listen to it, I am brought back to some moment during my fledging youth during that hot summer. This is moe's best studio album, topping no doy, by the sheer fact that they did not just arrange their music, put it to paper, and then record it to disc. There are some tracks that could be characterized as overproduced such as Plane Crash, but the whole thing has such a casual, yet professional feel that I can't compare it to any of their other releases. The flow of the album is great and moe shows their musical range with many different sounding tracks. A great starter album for anyone not familiar with their work, they'll be humming Happy Hour Hero in no time. A great album, easy to listen to, and I just can't waste my time here criticizing any part of this work, even though moe is not one of my favorite bands. You know its a solid listen when a non-fan gives it the props it is due. Buy this disc, go to the beach, and crank it!!

You cannot go wrong with this CD. I've turned quite a few people onto moe. with Tin Cans and Car Tires. The songwriting is killer! It's definitely more hard rocking than most jamband CDs but if tasty musicianship is your thing, there is plenty here to sink your teeth into. If you're just discovering moe. this would be an excellent place to start followed by No Doy, and then L if you want to hear some stellar playing.

this album is inredible the jam breaks are what really makes this album a favorite in my cd player. What makes this cd better is to see these guys do these songs live i have about 20 bootlegs and have seen them. they never get old and just when you think you have heard everything or think mainstream music is getting old they come out with the crazy song.buy warts and all vol.2 if you even like only one song on this great album

I like how the CD starts out with a trip back to seventies southern rock and then have fun with songs like Nebraska. If you like Phish, Spin Doctors, and the Allman Brothers you should buy this CD.

4.0 out of 5 stars Moe's Best Album so far, March 15, 2000
This review is from: tin cans & car tires (Audio CD)
Some people don't get it. Moe was not attempting to be more radio friendly with TC&CT at all. What the previous two reviewers didn't understand is that there is no point in moe. putting out an album with jammed out songs like thay had before. If you want that get their live tapes. With TC&CT the fans get something totally new from moe. They took a bunch of their live classics, added other insterments, and recorded the songs really well. On the previous three albums moe. basically took their live songs and played them in the studio. TC&CT gives the fans a chance to hear what moe.'s songs sound like when they are done up really well. For instance the strings backing up the band in Plane Crash, or the saxaphone added to HHH. Again, moe. wanted to make a real studio album, and not just record the same thing they do live.

4.0 out of 5 stars Just like a great wine, moe. matures beautifully with age., September 12, 1998

Whereas the albums Headseed & No Doy captured the improvisational (yet very raw) talents of Rob, Al, Chuck & Jim/Vinny, the new album -- TC & CT -- displays a degree of maturity for this Buffalo-based group.

TC & CT gives the listener much more than moe.'s familiar, old-school, college-radio-esque phish-y/zappa-like/widespread-ness (so-to-speak). It demonstrates a move towards musical maturity. Case in point: Derhak's vocal progressions through the albums Headseed, No Doy, and Tin Cans & Car Tires is reminiscent of Michael Stipe's transcendence from a musical afterthought, on Chronic Town & Murmur, to becoming the focal point of the band's musical engagement, on Life's Rich Pageant.

Highlights of moe.'s new album include Nebraska (revisited tune!!!!), Hi & Lo, It, and Happy Hour Hero.

For all the moe.rons out there: although this is more of a traditional "album," with songs not lasting more than 3 or 4 minutes, you'll still get that jamm-y feeling off of the nearly 9 minute long Plane Crash cut. One gets the feeling this will become a staple on their fall tour.... merely because of the main chorus: "Too ____ing hi!!"

5.0 out of 5 stars A great CD, anyday, anytime..., May 5, 2000

My brother turned me on to these guys - he is really big on them, and now I know why. Both of our tastes have mellowed over the years, and these guys have all the elements of simply great music, musicianship and *feeling* behind the music that is so hard to find these days.

Quite simply, this CD kicks a**, and had me singing along and wanting more! I also have 'No Doy', however I feel this CD - albeit less 'jammy' - was more appealing than some of the Phish/Zappa-ish musical meandering of 'No Doy'. But hey, get em both - headseed too - you won't be too disappointed unless you want to get into musical snobbery like some other reviewers (who probably can't play note 1 on any musical instrument!). Not a perfect CD, but I personally enjoy most every cut - A LOT!
