Can I transfer photos from my Windows 7 laptop computer directly to an iPad with retina display?

You can if the usb connector works for you. It did not work for me from my phone direct to my laptop. But laptop to iPad? Don't see that being an issue. In fact I may try that myself.

It's just as easy to do the transfer with ITunes. You can obviously do any that you want to transfer. I've not tried using the USB to transfer. Guess I could try it.

I've never tried it but it seems to me that the Ipad is looking for a DCIM folder and will not open the photo app if it doesn't find it. Based on that you couldn't "transfer" photos from your computer. I've used the camera and the SDHC card to connect and pictures are presented for selection to download. That works fine for me.
