From the supplier: Legislator Willie Brown was re-elected as speaker of the California Assembly on Jan. 24, 1995, despite the loss of the Democratic majority following the 1994 elections. The Republican party, which recaptured the majority, was already preparing to take over the Assembly's leadership, but Republican Paul Horcher decided to become an independent and voted instead for Brown, resulting in a 40-40 deadlock. On Jan. 23, 1995, however, the Democrats successfully expelled Richard Mountjoy, whose eligibility was in question, to allow Brown to win the speakership on a 40-39 vote.
