5.0 out of 5 stars Realista

This review is from: Te di la vida entera (Paperback)

4.0 out of 5 stars Misery and fate, April 20, 2001

This review is from: Te di la vida entera (Paperback)
I read this book in April 2001 in my visit to Cuba . I found it interesting . The misery before and after the revolution is well present . But also the strength and the pride of the Cuban people . Following the life and the loves of a woman during her entire life , one can feel that hunger and despair already existed well before Fidel Castro . The only new thing after the Revolution is the lack of liberty . The will of that woman to fight against all the difficulties is well told to us through comical situations , where the Cuban music always plays its role .

5.0 out of 5 stars devastating love story, realistic portraiture of cuba, April 11, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Te di la vida entera (Hardcover)
Simply put, Te di la vida entera ( I gave you my whole life) is a devasting love story of a woman for only one man, that mirrors Cuba destiny under Castro. Cuca loves Juan but when Castro gets going, Juan leaves Cuba for a better life. Cuca is Left behind and pregnant to confront the reality of daily life in Cuba under the spell of the Castro's goverment. Each chapter begings with a quotation from a bolero...like a pearl of wisdom....

4.0 out of 5 stars AN UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCE..., November 6, 1999
By
This review is from: Te di la vida entera (Hardcover)
Any Cuban who have lived through Castro's dictatorship in La Habana, KNOWS that Ms. Valdés is telling the truth. She is a very young writer which explains why "Te Di La Vida Entera" is not a perfect book. But in spite of her mistakes, she deserves any kind of recognition for her courage, her skills to write things exactly the way they are. And, like we used to say in Cuba, because "no tiene pelos en la lengua" (or loosely translated "call things by their names"). She writes in "Cuban" which is a plus. I enjoyed this book extensively. It brought back painful memories of the times I used to live in Havana. I am waiting for her breaktrough in the US.

1.0 out of 5 stars Increible!!, March 6, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Te di la vida entera (Paperback)

2.0 out of 5 stars Poor as propaganda and as literature, December 22, 1999
By
Helion Povoa Neto (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Te di la vida entera (Paperback)
Guillermo Cabrera Infante, the Cuban dissident writer who lives in London, appears to be always present in "Te di la vida entera". Ms Valdes refers to his physical presence in some moments and, above all, Infante is a big influence in her way of writing.

Like Infante, Ms. Valdes hates Castro and the Revolution; like Infante, she makes use of a strong eroticism; like Infante, she likes to tell jokes and to play with the words, in a way which resembles erudiction. Unhappily to us, Ms. Valdes is not as talented as Cabrera Infante. So the literature gives way to an angry panphlet. Remember "Strawberry and Chocolate" to see we can recognize the dignity of the Cuban people even if we are critical of the Cuban regime.
