When young Alec March goes to spend the summer at his grandfather's Connecticut farm, he has no idea of the fantastic & frightening adventure that awaits him. In the nearby woodland known as the Lot, all the animals sense a terrible threat approaching -- the rats of the town dump, led by the ferocious & ruthless Rat Kings, are about to invade & conquer the Lot when their own territory is redeveloped. But in order to fight this invasion, they need the help of a human, who can act as a general & leader of the defense. And Alec March is the one chosen by the Native American spirit that watches over the Lot ... but can just one boy truly lead an army of so many different animals against such a vicious foe?

This book appeared close to 40 years ago, but it still has plenty of excitement, shivers & thrills to spare. Alec's animal allies all have distinct personalities, and the menace of the rat horde is terrifying indeed. It's a page-turner in need of reprinting, because any child who loves a good tale of heroic animals will love this one. It's just waiting to be discovered by a whole new generation!
