I served in submarines when Zumwalt was the CNO (who can forget his "Z-Grams"?).
Zumwalt's description of his interview(s) with Admiral Rickover when he was being considered for the Nuclear Power Program bears a remarkable likeness to the "Rickover interview" that I experienced and those that other "Naval colleagues" have shared with me. The rest of the book is also notable for its clarity, insightfulness, and candor. If you served in the U.S. Navy in the 1960s and 1970s, this is a great read.

On Watch: A Memoir is a remarkable read. It is written as the admiral spoke.
I worked for Admiral Zumwalt in Vietnam in 1968-70, until he was promoted to CNO by Nixon. He was an interesting man with a sense of humor and a straight shooter, with no hidden agendas lurking about. Highly recommended. |
