Book Description

Fatherhood is one of the greatest challenges in a man's life but at the same time the reward of understanding how to be a father is far greater than any other one can imagine. As a new father, you may have noticed that many parenting books offer little in means of support for fathers.

Inside you'll discover a collection of parenting tips that will not only give you insight into being a dad (these tips work for moms too) that your kids need, but how to establish a foundation that can be passed down for many generations to come.

The Author, Derek Semmler, has lived and learned these lessons firsthand from the days of being a new dad through the teenage years.

What are three of the most precious words that any dad can hear from their child?  What three words do too many dads take for granted, and only realize the mistake they've made when it is far too late?

Dad, can we...

***
Excerpt:

Working 50+ hours per week and then coming home to work on a few side projects. Just one more email. I'll be home in an hour. We'll play catch right after dinner. It wasn't long and the requests from my kids were coming less frequently, they knew dad was "too busy right now" to give them 15 minutes.  Wow, I can get so much work done without all of these distractions.

Hold on...did I really just think of my kids as distractions?

I'm ashamed to admit it but there have been times where I thought the task in front of me was so important that everyone and everything around me was a distraction. Thankfully, I have a wife that was kind enough to gently (as in a good swift kick in the ass) remind me that the kids will only be little for so long, and before that "next email" is done they will be grown and out of the house.

Honestly, realizing that you're being a shitty dad - or even just not as good of a dad as you can be - is one of those moments that can bring the manliest man to tears.

Fatherhood is much easier when you know how to be a father that your kids need. That's why this book has been organized into an easy-to-follow guide on how you can be the best dad possible. This book is a fabulous reminder of what's really important and is chock-full of ideas for how to spend fun, quality time with your kids. The title says the book is for dads, but anyone with children will definitely find something to enjoy in this book." - Lisa Purdy

"Great for both moms and dads! I think this was a great book for both dads and single moms or even all moms. It made me think about the time I spend with my son and what I can do to change that to make it better. A real eye opener :) I really enjoyed the book! Great job!" - Amber

"As a father of two boys myself this book is prefect for me. After reading it, I'd say every dad should pick this up now to be reminded of what is most important in our lives... our children...Excellent read for sure and well done...Highly recommended." - B. Wilson

"Ready Reference for Dad's (and Mom's). This was a quick and fulfilling read... "Dad, can we" gives the reader a reality check and in a very simple way, reminds us that our kids not only need us, but we need them as well. Work, Work, Work.... when it should be Kids, Kids, Kids. I'm glad I read the book and when I feel myself slipping into a bad work life balance I know I just need to pick-up my Kindle to remind me that my family needs to come first. Great use of lists and ideas for family fun and adventure as well. Recommended!" - SGVINPA

5.0 out of 5 stars Yes - Work / life balance is important for Dads too... February 9, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
There's always a lot of press about how Moms are stressed out trying to balance a career and work, but not so much about Dads. I guess it's just been a given for so long that Dads will head off for a career that not much thought has been put into just how stressful that can be. Not anymore. Thank goodness our culture is turning things around and realizing that Dads are so critical to family success and must have some work /life balance too.

I've seen first hand what the demands of a job can do to a family. The Dad who will drop everything for work and then carries guilt because he was never there for his kids. It just doesn't have to be that way.

There are so many wonderful nuggets of advice in the book. Things that Dads (and Moms too!) can put into action to bring the word "unit" back into the phrase "family unit." There are practical and fun suggestions in here that won't cost you anything but your time. I had to laugh at some of the suggestions and can just picture a Dad and his kids doing them together.

If you are a stressed out Dad -- or a Mom who is watching her husband grow further away from the family -- pick up a copy of this book and put it into action. Even implementing a couple of the tips inside will yield real results for you and your family.

5.0 out of 5 stars Get off your butt and spend time with your kids! February 3, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I really enjoyed reading this book. It was full of creative and practical ideas for things to do with your children. What I love is the underlying premise behind the book, which is simply spend TIME with your kids. So many parents these days just don't make time for their kids, and would rather their kids make their own fun via video games, music, and movies. I'm not saying those things are inherently bad, but Derek introduces better ways to entertain your kids. And go figure, it involves the parents! Derek does a wonderful job of including examples from his own life as well as including descriptive pictures that truly paint the picture of what being a great parent is all about.

Get the book. You won't be disappointed!

5.0 out of 5 stars Although I Have The Greatest Dad In All The World..... January 26, 2012
By Kristie
Format:Kindle Edition
Any parenting book is worth the time to read, digest and learn tidbits of wisdom to carry over into your parenting skills. I am so thankful that I have a Great Dad who learned a great deal from observing others and just desiring to be the best Father that he could. Every Dad and Mom needs help knowing what to do. Children aren't born with a Guidebook attached to their tiny, precious feet.

If you are stuck in a rut and feel "disconnected" from your children, get this book. It has answers - a lot of them. REAL answers to help you in your day to day quest to be the best Father you can be while your children need you desperately. Pay attention....life slips by super fast.

P.S. My son got me addicted to Sponge Bob at an early age : ).

P.S.S. Even though I'm a MOM, I loved this book and Moms
could use these exact same strategies.

P.S.S.S. I LOVED this book!!!!! *****

More About the Author

Derek Semmler (Chicago, IL) is not your typical white collar, suburban father of two boys that happened to marry his high-school sweetheart - or is he? It might be his appearance (shaved head, earrings, tattoos, and long untamed goatee) that catches people off-guard; or the inquisitive looks he gets when he eases into the school parking lot to pick up his son on his Harley. But dig deeper and you find a humble man that is dedicated to working hard and providing a healthy, happy, and stable environment to raise his kids. On most evenings and weekends, you will find him outside horsing around with his kids or cheering them on at their event of the day.

Professionally, Derek has a diverse set of skills that range from burning the midnight oil while writing PHP code to managing million dollar IT projects. Derek is the author of less books than you can count on one hand, and has dedicated countless hours to building a series of blogs that cover topics such as personal finances, work / life balance, technology and blogging, and executive gifts.
