You don't have to be Irish to like this CD,

While this CD is a must-have for anyone of Irish ancestry, the universal appeal and sentiment expressed in "The Irish Wedding Song" transcend any ethnicity. While there may be other versions of the song available, Andy Cooney's version, found here, remains the gold standard by which all other versions are measured.

Great Romantic Music for Any Occasion,
This review is from: The Wedding Song Collection (Audio CD)
The Wedding Song Collection is a set of songs perfect for any wedding - Irish or otherwise - since the music is gently lilting and perfectly on topic. There are a number of different singers represented with this set.The title song is undoubtedly the most popular - "The Irish Wedding Song" by Andy Gooney. It mentions all of the ups and downs of weddings, and provides a great background song for the couple's first dance together. Again, it's not specifically Irish in nature, so it would be perfect no matter what type of wedding it was. The Voyage by Tony Kenny is a song about the work and care that goes into the voyage of life, and how creating a "ship" that is sturdy and of high quality helps to ensure that the couple stays together for a lifetime. Two more romantic, soothing songs follow - "Forever and More" and "I'll Never Find Another You". These are great for slow dancing or for background music during a reception. The three songs "Daddy's little Girl", "My Son" and "Mother" are all specifically targetted towards those parent-child dances that are traditional at weddings. The words may be a little hokey at times, but really, that's the beauty of a wedding. It *is* about sentimental, hokey feelings, about a giant, celebrated change between being alone and being with a new person. I do have to comment that it was a bit odd to have "Mother" sung by a male singer, when the sentiments are all from the Mother's point of view. I'd like to see that one redone with a woman singing. The remaining songs - "Siege of Ennis", "The Only One", "It's Our Anniversary", "You Touched Upon My Life", "Gown of White", "The Vows Go Unbroken" and "Old Time Waltz Medley" are all far less specific, meaning you can mix and match them as you wish. The Anniversary song of course you can save and play on each Anniversary, or perhaps honor a couple at the event who has been together for a long time. Would you play this CD at a time NOT involving a wedding? I could see playing the second half of the songs - which are gently romantic - pretty much any time. Many of the songs could prove inspirational to you if you're about to get married or are in a marriage and want to remember what your vows meant. Marriage isn't something that just happens. It's something that takes daily work, to care and nurture. These songs might help provide the inspiration to feel grateful for what you have and to put in the tender appreciation that helps a marriage last a lifetime. Well recommended.

One of our favorites! Carl Corcoran played for several years at an Irish Pub in Queens, NY in the 80's. We'd go to hear him all the time. He was regularly booked for weddings and eventually released this on a 45 (remember those?) so the wedding guests and pub patrons could buy a copy. It deserves to be a classic.
