I know the actual movie is rated PG-13, and I would agree. I think at least 13 or 14 is appropriate to read this book.

I would say 14. There are some pretty adult themes in the book.

It tells of inappropriate relationships but nothing explicit
I would think most middle school youths would sense the moral implications. It's milder than most tv shows.

I read it in my thirties, and will read it again now (65). But I am a fan of reading!

I don't think there's an age restriction for this book, although the too young may not understand it well.

Recently my son took the family to the movie with my fourteen and eleven year old granddaughters. I sat next to the eleven year old and she was affected.Afterwards I reread the book, and the movie was true to the text. Our discussion about money and materialism afterwards was excellent. If you have sophicated young adults, they can learn from this book.
