Be aware there is at least one other picture for the cover than shown here. I was surprised when the copy I got was not the one I remembered from my childhood with the cute dog and Julie feeding Whisper the apple. The other cover has a kinda peach colored background with an older very 80's looking Julie hugging and being nuzzled by Whisper (without the farm setting.)

This book I absolutely adored as an animal-loving young girl... perfect, sweet fantasy with positive messages.

This is an easy, short chapter book, with 6 chapters and large print, and black-and-white drawings at the beginning of each chapter. It's hard for me to comprehend how they fit the story that my childhood imagination lived in, in so few pages! It keeps the charm of the Whisper series, that gives it a value far beyond it's literary merits.

My son (reluctant to admit he had read & was attached to the book) begged me not to give our copy away to his niece. :) Any child at heart will find a happy place with Whisper (& Dorian the gentle, wise dragon...can't leave him out, because I loved him at least as much as Whisper!)

In this book, Julie is a girl struggling to find happiness, in the wake of a move to the country after the death of her mother. She is new at school, struggling to find friends, and her father is grieving & not thrilled with her escaping reality into the fantasy books she loves to read. Whisper is able to help open up Julie's and her veterinary father's hearts when they find her injured, and nurse her back to health, while trying to keep her safe from a prying reporter/neighbor. This book has it all...doggies, kittens, a caring "Aunt Martha," telepathic communication with a unicorn, forging a new friendship with a girl at school, wise advice on how to deal with the heart aches of life for a child's perspective... all perfect to capture a little girl's heart.
