there were definite whispers in the town..., December 20, 2010
this is a novel about human relationships, deception, jealousy, and murder. the
author, mabel seeley, has written a great suspense story here (read on).
young solveig nayes returns to her childhood home in cup, minnesota. it is the
1930's and solveig is a woman who is disliked in the town due to past, "bad"
behavior but,she is determined to return and live there.
once there, solveig must face her demon(s) namely, her stepsister, the beautiful, edith
and paul(edith's husband). paul was once solveig's first great love but, edith stole him away! solveig sees right away that the marriage is very unhappy...then one
day, solveig's friend helen is murdered. who did it? everyone in town thinks it
was solveig (and paul) but,we the readers know, someone else did it. was it edith?
poor edith ends up dead herself-too bad but,NOT too bad. edith's past evil doings
are revealed by the end of the book. needless to say,the truth does set them all
free at the end.(nice.)
by the by,the title(of the book) refers to two things, the name of the town-cup and the fact that everyone was whispering about solveig so,it is a bit of a play of words here.
mabel seeley's books have intriguing titles. it makes us want to read her books.

Suspense to the Max, April 28, 2009
This book is not, repeat NOT a romance novel as it was charactized in the past.
Mabel Seeley was a sucessful & popular writer who took from her life experiences to give us dark, still nights-wait, did you hear that? Are you sure you locked the door? But I know her so well, surely she couldn't...It's only the house creaking, the wind...isn't it?
If this is your gig, go to The Cup & face this small town & wait...if you survive the night.
Then, pick up "The Listening House" & "The Crying Sisters" also by Seeley. I would love to know if Mrs. Seeley ever spooked herself but must be content in knowing that she spooked me & I've read all her books at least 3 times-they still get me & all I have passed them on to.
These are fun reads, well crafted mysteries without the fantastic gyrations of a Christie where an average, independent woman faces the dark. They make sense, they give a sense of an America vanished & will keep you turning to the last page where you want more. How can you beat that?!!
