Editorial Reviews

Review

"A stunningly beautiful work of hyper-clean concrete poetry... This is a book examining language, finding tricks in the language that the language couldn't know it had." Geof Huth --dbqp: visualizing poetics

"The effect is shocking... It seems to me to be an important book... The poem adds to the conversation about what is poetry." A Bunch Books --bookdaily.blogspot.com

Paul Siegell is an experimentalist, a wordsmith poet who reaches beyond the confines of distilling a poetic thought in the expected way of reading poetry and instead takes us deeply into the world of concrete poetry. Perhaps it is best to begin with a description of the definition of Concrete Poetry, with a bow to those who approach this form with reservation: Concrete Poetry is an 'Art form developed in the 1950s and 1960s based on the visual aspects of words. In contrast to 'shaped' poetry, in which the meaning of a text is enhanced by the relationship between a sequence of lines and the overall pattern or silhouette that these lines create on a page (as in George Herbert's 'Easter-Wings', 1633, and Guillaume Apollinaire's Calligrammes, 1918), Concrete poetry largely dispenses with conventional line and syntax. It may bring into use not only a wide range of typefaces (see TYPOGRAPHY) but also other elements derived from calligraphy, collage, graphics and computer-generated shapes. It can appropriately be considered a visual art, though it is also a literary one'.

Paul Siegell, whose previous delicious collections of poetry include 'jambandbootleg' and 'Poemergency Room', takes the reader one step further into the experimental arena with 'wild life rifle fire'. In this small black and white book he splays out his message in sans serif block letters with words that take a page to stack and pow the poem forward, relaxing a bit here and there for a dalliance with symbols and characters that suggest the pleasures of blogging and of texting, and finally punches the last page with bold quote marks.

I'm not an expert on Poetry, just an average know-what-I-like-when-I-see-it kinda reader, and I LOVED this collection of Concrete Poems. (I admit to wikipedia-ing the genre) I can only be impressed by the cleverness, orginality and expression contained in each artistically formed poem. The Digital Age has created a new form of expressing language, and Siegell appears not only to have mastered knowledge of that language, he is able to manipulate it in a way that sparks our mind's curiosity, challenges our insight, and rewards our understanding, the characteristics I find enjoyable in poetry and writing. Art-With-Words is the best way I can describe, a fun addition to my collection.

This is my favorite book by Paul Siegell, I have them all, autographed cause I'm lucky enough to know the author. This collection of what I'd call word artwork, some almost puzzling, is so fun to read. I enjoy showing it to friends, its one of my most popular coffee table books.
I also highly recommend all of Paul Siegell's other works.
