This is an upres port of the critically successful 3DS game by the same name. Definitely leagues better than Operation: Raccoon City or even RE6. And if you're worried about it looking bad because of its 3DS origins, they've gone in and done the proper work to make it feel like a proper console game.
Please don't say RE Revs is "leagues better than ORC or RE6." That's simply not true. They're different types of RE games. Revs is more akin to RE4 than 5, 6, or ORC. They're all amazing games for different reasons. Try to think of 4 as "Leon" 5 as "Chris" and 6 as four different games, "Leon," "Chris," "Jake," "Ada." Think of ORC as a RE squad-based action shooter. Think of Revs as another "Leon."
Siegeshot is right. I too love all the main canon RE games, and they are all good in their own ways. Does that mean that one style of gameplay is necessarily better? No, they're just different, but again, everyone has different preferences and opinions.
I actually wish they had released Revelations right to the consoles from the beginning, since Revelations is considered part of the whole main story and its events are considered canonical. All the other main RE games are console games as well, so that makes sense, and it would've made the game more accessible to even more players.
But most importantly, it probably would've satisfied the wants of the classic horror fans more. I'm guessing one of the reasons RE6 received such mixed reviews at around the time of its launch was that ever since after RE5, many wanted the series to return more to its roots, and they were hoping they would see that in RE6, but were disappointed when 6 turned out to be more action horror than classic horror. (Then again, all throughout 2012, in the months leading up to 6's release, all the trailers had been indicating that 6 would be more fast-paced as bioterrorism has since gone global in that title, so I don't know what they thought they were now expecting when they got or tried the game. They supposedly knew what it was going to be like all along, but it's like in one ear and out the other.)
Had Revelations been released to the consoles sooner, it would've made a good lead up to 6. And with the desires of the classic fans met, they then would've been in a better mood, and probably would've been more accepting of 6 for what it is. It's really sad that so many gave 6 a bad score just because they prefer a certain style of gameplay more.
You can definitely say Revelations is far better than Operation Raccoon City. ORC is a bad game in general. It was too short, boring, full of glitches, and had awful controls. Not to mention in order to play the other half of the game you had to buy DLC.
Now for comparing RE6 and Revelations, I'd say Revelations is a better "Resident Evil" game. Revelations had a good balance of action and horror, while RE6 was mainly action mixed with some classic RE nostalgia. Revelations does a lot better a staying true to its roots. However, I'm not saying RE6 is a bad game. RE6 is a very solid TPS that has an enormous amount of content.
I played fully through Resident Evil Revelations and I couldn't put it down. I'll be picking up the WiiU version because it's the best thing that's happened to the franchise in a LONG time. I honestly would relate it more to 0, 1, 2, 3 and CV before I related it to 4. It's SORT OF like 4 but also more classic.
If you enjoy the classic games, like I do, you'll LOVE this game more than anything that's come out in years, and since it's a port, it's price point could make it one of the best games of the year. Like I said i'll be picking up the WiiU version, but I already own the 3DS version.
So I've just watched a bit of a few walkthroughs of Revelations on the 3DS on YouTube, and I get more excited every time. It'll be very interesting to see something closer to classic horror again in a modern RE game, as well as learning about the early history of the BSAA, and bridging the gap between 4 and 5.
I can since understand a little more now as to why many were dissatisfied with 6, okay, but if so many start unfairly hating on Revelations, I really don't know where to go. Some just seem impossible to please these days.
I bet there will probably still be some out there who still think 0, 1, 2, 3, and CV are still better than Revelations, despite Revelations being much closer to them in style than 4, 5, or 6. It's as if they just can't move past Raccoon City, or at least the year 1998.
