Great Writing produces a Great Novel,
By O'Neil De Noux (New Orleans, LA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Wolves of Memory (Paperback)
The Wolves of Memory is not only a fine novel, it is the best example of how to use flashbacks in fiction. I use this book when teaching writing classes. Do yourself a favor, FIND THIS BOOK. Order it here or haunt the used bookstores, but FIND IT and READ IT. You'll be captivated from the beginning.

This review is from: The Wolves of Memory (Paperback)
I read this book partly because I am interested in memory in general, and specifically memory in fiction and science fiction. I did enjoy the style of writing and the way the memories were meted out. It's hard to keep the pace of the story moving forward and the reader interested when the plot follows a nonlinear progression, but Effinger accomplishes this task very well. My main issue with the novel is one the author couldn't have helped, mostly that it hasn't aged well. I kept imagining TECT as Google, or even more ridiculous, Wikipedia. I also felt the last third of the novel was inferior to the first two-thirds, and ultimately I was disappointed with the denoument.
