5.0 out of 5 stars A beautifully illustrated overview of world religions
This is a wonderful way to introduce children and even adults to a wide array of world religions. (My husband confessed that he had not heard of a couple of the religions included in the book, so it was educational for our whole family!) 3.0 out of 5 stars Short on Substance!
Better child oriented art and more detailed explanation of the various world religions would of made this book extremely valuable for children. A good, very short summary!

This is a wonderful way to introduce children and even adults to a wide array of world religions. (My husband confessed that he had not heard of a couple of the religions included in the book, so it was educational for our whole family!) While obviously not intended as an encyclopedic treatise on each religion, the book provides an overview of history and teachings that ideally will pique the reader's curiosity. And the illustrations, which incorporate symbols from each faith tradition, are a delight.

The Chicago area has a wonderful diversity of cultures and faiths. I have enjoyed sharing this book with people of many different faiths, children and adults. This book is endorsed by a wide range of religious leaders and organizations (see author's notes).

4.0 out of 5 stars It's a wonderful world, January 5, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: A World of Faith (Hardcover)
This is a wonderful book to teach children and adults (!) the BASIC origin & beliefs of many religions throughout the world. The illustrations are beautiful! The text on each page isn't too long which helps in keeping the interest of children. The religions are listed alphabetically with a picture on the left hand side and about 1/2 page of text on the right. It is quite pricey, and although I was given a copy of the book, I would recommend purchasing it. (I was planning on buying it.) It's hard to put a price on spiritual knowledge. In a world FULL of diversity, it is essential to educate ourselves and our children as to the differences and similarities of people throughout the world (and in our own country). Education & knowledge bridge the gap of discrimination.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and informative, December 8, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: A world of faith (Hardcover)
I love this book, not only are the illustrations stunning but the writing is concise and fluid. It will appeal to parents as well as children because there is so much information about different religions and the art seems to capture the nature of some of these faiths.

This review is from: A world of faith (Hardcover)
Wow! This book is absolutely amazing! The artwork is captivating and the information is overwhelming. It's a picture book for all ages - for kids because of it's majestic paintings, and for teens and adults because of its vast amount of information on 28 different religions. This book is a very good investment for anyone who is intrigued with the many faiths and customs of people around the world.

Enhanced with beautiful, 'museum quality' artwork throughout, "A World Of Faith: World Celebration Special Edition" by Peggy Fletcher Stack and Kathleen Petersen provides the reader with a succinct and informative description religions. Alphabetically presented these faiths range from the Amish to the Zoroastrians. Here included are Baha'is, Buddhists, Jews, and Muslims. Hindus, Shintoists, and Sikhs. The diverse sects of Christian Scientists, Episcopalians, Mormons, Lutherans, Eastern Orthodox, Quakers, and Catholics. 2.0 out of 5 stars Great graphics, but text problematic, January 26, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: A world of faith (Hardcover)
The intent is honorable: no doubt our children need visual aids that help make sense of diversity. But I would much rather have ignorance than misinformed opinion. The entry on Sikhism in the book is disturbingly inaccurate. Whatever little I saw of other traditions also seemed reduced to a caricature. Granted, the book is for tiny tots, but who says toddlers need to be fed misrepresented facts? In other words, does the fact that the book is for children exempt its grown-up author(s) from doing their cultural homework?

Please exercise caution in representing other faiths to your children. God knows we don't need any more stereotypes than already exist.
