The Ultimate Mental Junk Food,
By
This review is from: wtf (Paperback)
THREE QUICK POINTS
* Point 1: This is the ultimate in mental junk food. It's like a McD's Big Mac with extra cheese and special sauce with bacon piled on top and no lettuce or pickles. * Point 2: It never slowed down. It felt like being trapped in the passenger seat of a high octane sports car with a brick on the accelerator. * Point 3: Darkly comical. It's the kind of comedy that when you laugh you wonder whether or not you were supposed to and if it makes you a bad person because you did. SHORT SYNOPSIS 'wtf' recounts the shenanigans of six prep school teenagers involving a car accident with a deer, drug deals gone wrong, and horny couples hooking up in front of strangers, all over the course of one night. MY THOUGHTS I'll admit that I had no idea what to expect from this book--the back cover blurb was ambiguous enough to keep me in the dark, but intriguing enough to pique my curiosity. From the first page the story flies and never really slows down. This equates to a fast read--easily done in a single sitting--but the downside is that it leaves little time to process or digest the unfolding story and that can lead to a feeling of overwhelm. Each chapter is time-stamped and alternates between the perspectives of the individual students. It's very much like watching a movie put together in short vignettes. And although there was plenty of action, it wasn't the typical bombs exploding or rapid fire shoot-outs; it was more *quirky* action. To give an example, there's a scene where one of the guys needs to get something out of a dead deer's mouth. When he gets back to the scene of the accident, he spots someone loading up the deer and driving away. He follows and right when he thinks he's going to get what he needed, he's looking down the barrel of a shotgun. (You're probably trying to process the part about something being stuffed in a dead deer's mouth, huh?) While the book pushes you forward, it reveals how each of the characters are connected. There was even a dark twist at the end that tied everything up, but the happily-ever-after style ending felt unnatural. As far as quick fun reads go, 'wtf' gets the job done. It truly is a romp. Just don't expect any compelling character development or an earth-shattering plot. You'd probably enjoy this book if you enjoy movies in the style of Ocean's Eleven, Snatch, Pulp Fiction, or Get Shorty.

Edgy & Original,
By E. Kristin Anderson "EKAnderson" (Austin, TX) - See all my reviews
This review is from: wtf (Paperback)
Told from alternating perspectives, WTF is the story of one night gone horribly wrong. Each of the five characters has a story to tell - why they are at the party or the club or in the car crash that kicks off the book. At first, no one's story seems to line up with the others' - how are a drug dealer, a waitress cramming for the SATs and a speech team nerd connected? From the Mafia to a party in Westchester, all the hihg-and-lowlights of the New York party life are present and accounted for in this fast-paced romp of a novel. If you're looking for something edgy and original, WTF is a great pick.

Loved it!,
This review is from: wtf (Paperback)
I loved this book! It was fast paced and funny. You felt for the characters as they slipped and slid their way through the city trying not to get killed on their way to keep their names clean. The characters drew me in from the begining. Hilarious at some turns and unpredictable. I would certainly recommend!

Too much stuff thrown in your face,
By
This review is from: wtf (Paperback)
A friend let me borrow this; I read it in a couple of hours and wasn't very impressed. Maybe because I'm 21 and past being a teenager, but the books seemed like it was trying too hard to please a younger crowd by revolving the storyline around drugs, partying and sex.
There was too much action going on all the time - screaming, crashes, blood, mobs... this book thrusts everything it can at your face without much downtime to get to know the characters, much less care about them. Plus the fact tha they're all braniacs (NYU, Princeton, MIT?? I would have NEVER guessed that such academically smart people could be so stupid) made it even more unbelievable. The Epliogue was the most laughable part. Maybe if it was taken out, I could have taken the book more seriously. Lots of comtemporary references: facebook, amy winehouse, blackberries. Because the book is so contemporary and largely geared toward the whole MTV-Laguna Beach-Jersey Shore crowd, it will wear down with time and become outdated in 3 years. As far as teen books go, it was an okay read. I'd choose something else though

SO much FUN,
By
This review is from: wtf (Paperback)
Whoa! I LOVED this book! I had SO much FUN reading it. I was so excited when I got it and it did not disappoint me at all. It's about one of those crazy party-nights when every single thing goes so very wrong. There are so many WTF moments and so many OMFG moments you just can't stop reading. I devoured it in one day!
The writing was awesome. The characters were cool, I felt I was watching a really fun movie. The plot was just so twisted and fun. Each chapter starts with the time its happening. It goes ahead and then back, switching from one character to the other, as you figure out and unravel what's really going on. As always, I fell for the worst in the crowd: Waits! The cover is awesome! So urban and eye-catching and the title is so fitting, no better title for this book. It's entertaining/ funny/ modern/ light/ cool book that you just can not miss! Definitely recommended.

A Funny Book,
By Lauren's Crammed Bookshelf (PA, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: wtf (Paperback)
This book caught my eye a long time ago when I first saw the eye-catching cover and title, so when it somehow ended up in my mailbox, I was so excited to read it.
How was it, you may ask? Well, just like the cover suggested, it left with you with a wtf feeling, though a good one at that, because this book is crazy, funny, and fabulous, even though I will admit it was a bit underdeveloped in places. wtf is told from the viewpoint of six characters (Jimmy, Cam, Bryon, Waits, Reina, and MC) and each managed to have their own distinctive personality ranging from "The Jock" to "The Druggie" to "The Loser" and so on. Which made this one aspect I liked, because with a book that has many POVs, you have to worry if some will be interchangeable, but that was hardly the case with this. I also loved all the drama the characters managed to get into with this book from car crashes to running from the cops everything that can possible go wrong was present at some point. The characters also made this to be one read that you could easily finish in one sitting because of the fact that that it constantly left you curious about what was going to happen next. Further more, the plot of this was also a lot of fun. It wasn't all that serious or life-changing but it provided solid entertainment, which is just what you need some days. I thought Peter did a great job of switching from character to character, because I never felt like I missed anything too big. But I did think he could have possibly fleshed some parts out more like the characters and some plot lines. Oh, and I have to add, I loved the epilogue for this book! It was really unique! In all, wtf is a funny and fabulous book perfect for one rainy or snowy afternoon. I can't wait to see what Lerangis has in store for us next. Grade: B

WTF is right.,
By
This review is from: wtf (Paperback)
When I first read the description for WTF, I thought it sounded like a fun, exciting read. You look at the cover, and see a cover that almost dares you to pick it up and in a way screams WTF. I love it. In WTF, Peter Lerangis never leaves you with down time, just throws more and more events at you. Though it was almost a bit too much thrown at you at times. As I was nearing the half way point of the book, I was just figuring out what had happened in the beginning of the book. Nonetheless, the plot was totally fun all along the way. The plot to me was about the only redemming aspect of the book.
The end is kind of abrupt. And following the ending, all you get is a short few sentence summary of what happens to each character in their next few years following the story. I really would've loved to know more of what happened to everyone, immediately and down the road. I wasn't too crazy about the characters. The book is less than 300 pages, and there's 5 different POV going on. Each POV was so short and choppy I never really got a good idea of each characters story that night. In addition to that, you never really get to know any of the characters outside that night. I felt this really took away from the story. The characters just weren't very personable, and I couldn't connect with any aspect of them. And if I can't connect to the characters, how am I supposed to connect with their story? Overall, WTF was a book that left me without much of an opinion. WTF deals with drugs, partying, injuries - all issues that should leave you with a reaction, but I was left with nothing. It had an enticing plot, mediocore writing, a shiny cover, and characters that really did nothing for me. While WTF didn't appeal to me, as a reader, I can definately see how many other teens would love it. The teen rebellion going on in WTF would most likely appeal to a large group of teens. Characters are the biggest thing for me, and if I cannot connect with the characters in some way, it's really hard for me to get past that. Readers who are big on plot and action will definately enjoy WTF. |
