A New Year, July 17, 2007
This review is from: xxxHOLiC, Vol. 9 (Paperback)
Time turns in this volume of xxxHOLiC as the new year arrives.
As it begins, the three teens are sharing their first dreams of the new year, which according to tradition foretells one's fortune for the coming twelve months. Typically of Watanuki, he steadfastly refuses to heed Yuko's less than subtle hints that it's not Himawari but Domeki who's meant for him, although she's aware that he's going to have to figure it out himself in spite of her doing everything but hitting him over the head with a sledgehammer (and even that might not work) to get her two best boys together.
This time, however, Yuko gets backup - in the form of the departed spirit of Domeki's lookalike grandfather, who is apparently aware of what's going on and tries to give Watanuki his own hint during a friendly visit in the dreamworld but gets interrupted when the boy wakes up.
In the second half of the story, a lonely little girl named Kohane being exploited by her mother for her spiritual powers finds herself drawn to Watanuki, sensing a kindred spirit and crying out for someone who might finally understand her. With his usual kindness, Watanuki answers the call, becoming the first person to see her as a child instead of a psychic. As the volume ends, we've obviously not seen the last of either Kohane or Domeki's grandfather.
This is also an alarming entry for those following the Tsubasa crossover, as we get hints that things are about to go horribly wrong for Syaoran and his crew in the next volume or two of Tsubasa.
An entry that maintains xxxHOLiC's generally high standards.

XXXHolic Begins a New Year With a Girl Who Sees Spirits, June 24, 2008
This review is from: xxxHOLiC, Vol. 9 (Paperback)
This is an interesting chapter where Wantanuki meets a young girl who sees spirits like he does. She keeps staring at spirit in a cherry tree and lured there in the pouring rain. Wantanuki is learning more about Domeki and what he may not like about him. He also knows what he wore as a child. Now there's a game of Mah-Jong to play.

Sets The Stage For The Next Volume, March 1, 2008
This review is from: xxxHOLiC, Vol. 9 (Paperback)
I think the previous reviewer has put together the contents of the story quite nicely. Indeed, this is a great volume that introduces some new characters that play key roles in the next volume. I have the entire xxxHolic collection, but haven't read the old volumes in a while. It's great to see some new Holic that makes me renew my interest in the series and make meanxiously anticipate the next volume.
