Book Description

October 27, 2009
Kimihiro is a mystery even to himself. He has no memory of his past, or even of his beloved parents’ names. Neither does he have any idea why he is being followed by malicious spirits. But his boss, the witch Yûko Ichihara, knows, and in this volume many of Kimihiro’s secrets are finally revealed!

xxxHOLiC crosses over with Tsubasa, also by CLAMP. Don’t miss it!

More About the Author

Clamp, stylized as CLAMP, is an all-female Japanese manga artist group that formed in the mid 1980s. Many of the group's manga series are often adapted into anime after release. It consists of their leader Nanase Ohkawa, who provides much of the storyline and screenplay for all their works and adaptations of those works respectively, and three artists whose roles shift for each series: Mokona, Tsubaki Nekoi, and Satsuki Igarashi. Almost 100 million Clamp tankōbon copies have been sold worldwide as of October 2007.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Gathering Storm, October 27, 2009

This review is from: xxxHolic, Vol. 14 (Paperback)
Generally speaking, Watanuki tends to get the tour-de-forces in Holic. In this volume, Domeki gets center stage.

As it begins, Kohane surprises Watanuki by requesting a visit from Domeki - who she's taken to calling Shizuka-kun - after Yuko and the boys arrange for her guardianship while her mother pulls herself together, affirming that she's become attached to him as well. The conversation that ensues when she asks him about how he feels towards Watanuki is remarkable, as he pours out all the frustration, tenderness, weariness and affection that is his complicated relationship with Watanuki in what is probably the most emotional display we've seen from him in the entire series. By the time it's over, we understand why he's put up with all the heartache, grief and physical damage when more than a few people would have walked away - and it's arguably the best material CLAMP has written for him so far.

It's a good thing that Watanuki has Domeki, because he's going to need him more now than ever before. As Syaoran clearly didn't know that the disaster which befell Sakura and Fai was going to happen, he wouldn't have paid his part of the price to save Watanuki during the Himawari incident due to foreknowledge of the support he would be to Sakura in the dreamworld - leaving their connection the biggest mystery yet to be solved in the Tsubasa/Holic continuum. In the second half of this volume, a monologue by Yuko begins to unravel the question of why Syaoran seems almost as concerned about Watanuki's welfare as that of Sakura and his foster parents - and Watanuki may be too involved for comfort in the struggle in which the Tsubasa gang is about to engage.

As the volume ends, and worlds away two men begin a hard wait for their foster children to return to them, the spirit of a grandfather who can no longer be there for his grandson prays for his safety and that of the boy he won't abandon - and the wait for the die to be cast begins.
