can you turn it off when not in use?

Not that I know of. It does stop counting at 12:00 midnight and starts all over again.If you're worried about battery consumption, don't. They seem to last forever and are easily replaced

No, when the batteries die, replace them. I have had it for 16 months and have replaced the batteries only once. Great little machine. If you aren't going to use it for a while, just take the batteries out.

I have never tried to shut it off, it just keeps resetting itself at midnight.

Display shuts off automatically after a certain length of time. There is no on/off switch.

As everyone else has said, it stays on all the time. I checked the manual and there were no instructions for turning it off.

No, it does not turn off. The screen is always displaying your current step count.

While there is no off/on switch, you can always remove the battery when not in use.

Unfortunately, no. It is on all day and night and the memory will reset (number of steps becomes zero) at midnight everyday. You can track the memory as far as the past 7 days.

I gave it as a gift but i asked the recipient and she said that it never shuts off.
