The Young Step-Mother is one of the best victorian stories i have ever read. It is sweet without being sticky, funny without being comedic, and touching throughout. It is the story of a young bride who marries an older man with 3 kids. She is so afraid the kids will not like her that she makes mistakes by giving too much in the beginning. She shows some weakness if she is pushed too hard by the children, and learns from her mistakes. The entire story-which is quite long-is interesting, as it portrays the Victorian Era truly in the sense of the wording of the story, the problems that it portrays, and the life of an upper class woman in the era. Great read!

I enjoyed this book. I really like Charlotte Mary Yonge and have been reading many of her books. This wasn't exactly one of her best books that I'd recommend to people not familiar with her, but it's a good choice for readers who like her and want to read more of her books. As someone who's studied the Victorian era, I really enjoy Yonge because her beliefs and writing style really epitomize the culture of that time period.

Another solid effort from Charlotte Mary Yonge. This time the Crimean War is in the picture so lots of terrifying Victorian medicine. Lots of characters, lots of moral development and nice and long! Don't make vows, they can be inconvenient.

While I do enjoy reading historical type fiction books, this one just drug along like cold molasses. The first part wasn't to bad, but I thought I was getting closer to the end and whoops! Only 1/2 way through.
