Product Description

ON SALE in celebration of hitting #1!

Try to stop the slimy Red Weed from spreading over the land as it changes every patch of green grass it touches into red tendrils.

❝ The Red Weed began to creep, like a slimy red animal across the land... ❞

In this board game, use strategy similar to Othello, Reversi, Go, or Ataxx to defend your territory of green grass. The goal of the game is to make your tiles of grass a majority of the tiles on the field, by converting as many of the Red Weed tiles as possible. The quicker you conquer the Red Weed, the more points you score.

The gameplay is simple...yet surprisingly challenging and addictive. Tap a square of grass to see your available moves. You can grow your grass in an open square adjacent to any of your pieces of grass. Any red weed squares surrounding that new square of grass will also turn to grass. But if you move (transplant your sod) TWO squares away, the same thing will happen...you'll plant new grass and any red weed around it will also change...but the grass will be removed from your source square, leaving the fertile soil open for the red weed. Make your two square transplant moves carefully!

Can you stop the Red Weed before it covers every field, and ditch, and hedgerow? Or will your land succumb to the Red Weed?

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Game, Nice AI, Very Good Music January 3, 2013
Verified Purchase
This game lived up to its description, and is one of the better games offered by Amazon in general (the last couple of weeks has seen some amazing apps being offered, which itself is unusual).

Red Weed has a "steampunk" feel to the graphics and decor, as well as the music, although with a Theremin twist to it. Except for the network access requirement, there are no ads, no In-App Purchasing (IAP), or FB Like/Review requirements as we've seen with too many FAotD offerings these past several months.

This is a variant of Othello/Reversi/etc., and offers different playing fields which lends to more interesting play than a standard blank field due to the change of tactic or strategy. The sound effects work well, and dramatic emphasis was given to the red grass taking over your green grass, which gives a sense of urgency which can be lost in a generic game of this type.

There are a couple of niggling things that I'd like to see improved, such as an Undo button, at least for the last action, as sometimes a touch screen can accidentally cause a wrong move. Another one is that the tutorial and instructions are brief, which might lead to some confusion as to why the tiles are changing the way they do. Lastly, I'm not a fan of leaderboards nor unnecessary internet access requirements; that usually causes me to drop a star, but the beauty of this game and the lack of other permissions gave it back.

With just a dozen levels currently, the game is short, but more levels are promised and there are three difficulty levels, for a total of 36 playable levels. When I get through all of them, I might have a shot at beating my wife on its two-player "Hot Seat" mode.

In all, the game is about 4.

3.0 out of 5 stars It is okay! January 3, 2013
Verified Purchase
A game which derives the game-play from the old board game and later an arcade game known as Ataxx, slimewars reversi etc whatever you call it. The presentation is good and runs fine on Kindle fire. The game does not fully utilize the whole screen and there is no exit button. While the game is okay it is not really anything out of the ordinary.

While I do understand that Android OS memory management does not mandate applications to be completely closed and can run indefinitely in the background as long as they are not services which can drain battery. Having said, I personally do not like any games that do not have a exit button. (It is purely a matter of personal preference) You can kill the app using a task killer to have peace of mind. The game does not have any unwanted modules and no questionable permission issues are seen in this version offered on FAOTD.

Overall I rate this with 3 stars for making a very good clone of Ataxx. A decent free app of the day. But I would not pay $1.99 for it. 99c is the correct price as long as developer considers adding a EXIT button to the menu for satisfying paranoid android users like me.

1.0 out of 5 stars Updated - Still one star - EVIL Permissions January 3, 2013
By inigo
Verified Purchase
UPDATE: While as others point out, the "home" button may be a valid "exit" command, it's not that hard to put an explicit one in the game. But no matter -- the recent update added excessive permissions. Would drop to 0 stars if I could. Glad I didn't actually pay for this (was a FAOTD) and then have the permissions get ugly. Will probably end up deleting unless further updates return to reasonable permissions.

Old:
Network communication - Full Internet Access

New:
Read only access to phone state
(1)Open network sockets
Write to external storage
Access information about Wi-Fi networks
(2)Access the list of accounts in the Accounts Service
Access information about networks
PowerManager WakeLocks to keep processor from sleeping or screen from dimming
(3)com.google.android.c2dm.permission.RECEIVE

(1) This means it will ACCEPT incoming connections from the Internet. From who? When?
For a game? Not on my phone.
(2) Not giving a game access to my accounts - especially if it's accepting connections from outside -- who else might connect and get the info?
(3) c2dm was deprecated last June. This app wasn't released on Amazon until August last year, but this permission didn't appear until the recent update. Poor/sloppy programming.

====
Not a bad game, but there's no way to exit. The standard android menu and back/undo buttons do nothing. Pressing home leaves the game, but it stays running in the background. I had to use a task killer to stop it.
Fix this and get some stars back.

4.0 out of 5 stars A nice clone of Ataxx January 3, 2013
By Will 20
Verified Purchase
This is a clone of the game Ataxx that I used to play back in the early 90's. It has a similar game play to Othello, except you either clone your pieces by moving one space, or move your pieces two spaces. You capture enemy pieces by moving one of yours adjacent to enemy pieces.

There's a nice tutorial at the beginning, nice graphics, and no obvious way to exit the game.

2.0 out of 5 stars Clever but difficult January 3, 2013
Verified Purchase
The game is clever but difficult to learn and play. The instructions barely point out the mechanics with practically nothing about game play and certainly not strategy. It would seem that the AI would have an advantage on always playing second but I wouldn't know how to prove that. The game appears to be similar to Othello but not quite the same and the various levels with obstacles blocking squares adds some welcome variety. One star subtracted for the poor instructions and two stars subtracted because there is no way to end the game except to kill it in task manager, an unforgivable and pointless omission.
