Ruth A. Symes grew up in Warrington, Cheshire, UK, with an avid interest in all things literary, historical and genealogical. After a gap year working in archives, she studied English Literature at Queens' College, Cambridge followed by a PGCE at King's College, London and a PhD at the University of York. She was a lecturer in British Culture at The Norwegian Study Centre, The University of York from 1995 to 1998, teacher and Head of English at Abbey College, Manchester from 1999-2002 and Editorial Team Leader at Manchester College of Arts and Technology from 2002-2005. Since then she has worked as a freelance writer and historian for many genealogical, historical and literary magazines. She has five family history titles: Stories From Your Family Tree : Researching Ancestors Within Living Memory (The History Press, 2008) which was updated and republished in 2016 as Unearthing Family Tree Mysteries (Pen and Sword Books, 2016); It Runs in the Family : Understanding More About Your Ancestors (The History Press, 2013). Family First: Tracing Relationships in the Past (Pen and Sword Books, 2015) and Tracing Ancestors Through Letters and Personal Writings (Pen and Sword, 2016).
