Customers have mixed opinions about the audio quality of the product. Some mention it has great sound for what it cost, while others say it produces loud annoying sound effects when the input signal is an ultrasound. This module was made very well. I am wasting its great stereo amplifier qualities. I am only using it as a mono- amplifier in an ultrasound cannon. I live in the middle of the city. Yet, deer eat my roses and hostas and destroy them. Hopefully the ultrasound 24 kHz banshee screech will “suggest” to the deer that there are more pleasant areas to feast in rather than in my garden.
I set this ultrasound cannon up using modules available from all over Amazon: a 12 volt motion detector, an XR2206 sine wave generator, a pre-amp, this PAM8610 amplifier, and a waterproof tweeter.
Other than this, I really quite like the little fella and just ordered a second one for another project.
My amp was specifically for Native American flute.
On the photo, you'll see the black DC coaxial power jack, the four green terminals are for two speaker (you don't have to use both if you want mono and the two white connectors are audio input. One of them is jumpered if you want mono, simply remove it for the other channel if stereo.
It has built-in limiting, that will prevent burning it up if you drive it too hard. I used a 4" diameter speaker from Parts Express, they were 40w, since the speaker was loafing I had crystal clear sound.
Purchased identical replacement, LED doesnt light, no output.
Sent back, 2nd replacement also LED doesnt light, no output.
Steer clear of this company, no quality control!
- Works
- Impressive output for the size
- Didn't explode.
The bad:
- Terrible documentation (more on this later).
- No included volume knob.
- Rather high voltage requirements.
- Audio quality is a crapshoot. Some files sound fine when compared with a regular PC audio setup, other ones sound like a very loud phone speaker with distortion. Usually not too bad though.
The Ugly:
- Voltage info is completely and utterly wrong. You are not going to get this to do anything useful at 6 or 7.5v or whatever random number they threw in at a given point in the listing. Straight up no audio output (although the LED will light and it'll pretend to be on). I wouldn't take this over 12v. I could not get this to operate at less than 9V. More on this in the next bullet point.
- Utterly hilarious (and terrible) voltage drop failure mode. At around 9.1-9.2V you'll start hearing a rapidly increasing tea kettle sound. By 9V flat it's screaming it's head off. I was running mine off a 9V battery (which when fresh start at 9.4v) and I couldn't for the life of me figure out what was going on. Turns out the battery voltage was dropping causing it to start screaming.
Not unusable but still kinda annoying.
Other notes: if you aren't a bit techie, the lack of paperwork is a bit challenging.
