One might be tempted to ask whether another collection of Plato's works is really necessary, given that they have been translated many times. But several factors set this particular volume apart, making it a worthy addition to most libraries. The translations are all relatively recent and thus reflect contemporary language use and terminology. The collection includes works such as the Minos, Epinomis, Demodocus, Eryxias, and Axiochus, which, though generally considered not to have been written by Plato, are "Socratic" in form or style. The text itself is clearly printed and laid out, with useful notes, and Cooper's introduction and notes about the translations are helpful in setting the dialogs in context. I got this book because I haven't read Plato in a while and I wanted a convenient volume that I could keep by the bedside. It would be good for me, I decided, to read a dialogue each night before bed. Who knows, maybe I would even dream of Socrates. When I am not reading it, the 1800-page volume can also serve as a sturdy little bedside table, a handsome place to put your tea and biscuits. (If you don't mind setting your cup of tea on the cornerstone of western civilisation.)

It has been a delight to rediscover the dialogues in these elegant contemporary translations, and a surprise to discover so many additional works that I had never seen before. The publisher's workmanship is beautiful too, with quality paper, good cloth binding, and attractive typesetting with generous margins. I like to have room on the page to scribble my own impertinent replies to Socrates, and to ask him questions that he always affably refuses to answer.

Yesterday I had left the book open in the middle of Alcibiades. When I came back into the room one of my children was reading it. "What's this?" she said. "A novel, or a collection of stories?"

"It's philosophy," I said.

"Philosophy!" She was stunned. "I never knew philosophy was so funny."

It is a testament to the quality of these translations that a child could mistake Plato for a novelist; that she could read him without having the faintest idea that it was Serious Business; and that her first response to Plato's Socrates was laughter.

This book has been sitting on my shelf for several years. I bought it for a college class, and found the dialogues which were required reading to be both thought provoking and entertaining to read. I have recently decided to start reading this entire book. I'll be honest, many of the dialogues seemed to me to be jumbles of words and I feel like I need a professor to explain what Plato means by them. I found them nearly impossible to follow. I don't want to give this book a negative rating because of my inability to follow it, I have to admit that though I do consider myself to have above average intelligence, some things I won't ever figure out on my own. I enjoyed the dialogues that followed the last days of Socrates. I enjoyed the Republic. This purchase was by no means a waste, but I do believe that some of these dialogues are very advanced, not meant for beginners, and someone who is not a philosophy major reading them is like a non-scientist attempting to read the latest astrophysics journal.

The ancients and specifically Socrates need to be revisited often. Don't get lost in the "pure reason" of the "understanding". Dont adopt a faith that is not your faith (the faith of the Logicians). Socrates did what he did for a reason and choose death over exile for a reason. Even to this day, his death echoes to the hearts of men and women when faced by the authority of Sophists. His spirit lives on, his view of philosophy is the true view. Like William James. It is for the working man, growing youths, women fighting for equality, anyone who finds themselves in a situation where the gadfly of Athens is needed. I know that is primarily of the "Apology" but all of the dialogues will remind you why to philosophize, why we should philosophize, when it is necessary and of course the true aim, to seek The Good.

I got this edition of Plato's Works back in March, as I wanted, not only a TRULY COMPLETE edition of Plato, but modern translations as well. I have an MA in History, but one of my BA's is in Philosophy, with an emphasis in Early Western and Scholastic Philosophy. Over the years since, I have read many philosophers, from Plato, to Marx, to Mao, and many more.

But ultimately, it ALL goes back to Plato. As Alfred North Whitehead said, all philosophy AFTER Plato was and is footnotes to him. And one cannot argue that Plato was to Western Civilisation every bit as important as Moses, and the other Biblical writers, and possibly moreso.

This particular book is well-bound, with a dust jacket. I got it from a private seller at Amazon, and if memory serves it was listed as VERY GOOD condition, which it is in fact. There is some minor underlining at the beginning of the text, but that is all. Buying this book hard-copy for US$35 is a steal.

Back to the content. These are all modern translations. I am used to the Jowett translations, which are all VERY dry. These are much easier to read. My knowledge of Greek is extremely limited, and even then mostly New Testament Greek, which is an entirely different dialect, for lack of a better word, than what Plato used.

My personal recommendation is that, if you are reading merely for basic knowledge, use this text. If you are a true scholar of Plato (as I fancy myself to be), STILL use this text, as well as other translations, including Jowett, for comparison. Better yet, learn the original Greek!

For those of us who cannot learn Greek at this time, this book is a jewel. It contains EVERYTHING, either written by Plato, or thought to be, or that even came to us under his name, spuriously so. It is THE MOST COMPLETE edition out there.

Plato is the real deal. Reading him will set you to truly understand the human condition. There is no one, not Aristotle, not Moses, and I would dare to say, not even Jesus (and I say that as a Christian!), who can impart the kind of knowledge that Plato can. One who does not read him cannot be said to be any kind of scholar. In fact, if I may be so bold, I would say that reading Plato is necessary to even be truly human.

In sum, I encourage EVERY PERSON who is literate to read this book. In fact, it SHOULD be required reading in EVERY high school across the land. The only reason it isn't is because, as a previous reviewer noted, the government (which controls the curriculum in our schools) would be terrified of people actually learning to THINK for themselves.

For $50 you are getting every Platonic dialogue in easily accessible translations. These are easy to read with good little intros for each. You can easily find different translations/explanations online, but this serves as a perfect little index. I mark it up and treat it like my Plato study Bible. If you have more money you could spend more on a set that is volume out, on better paper, etc., but for the price this is the best you will find.

This book occupies a place on my shelf of most precious books. The book itself is exceptional in that it provides all the works of Plato and some earlier discussions and letters from Socrates (Plato's mentor). Within the chapters, are background notes and reading notes that are very helpful and the translation is perfect. The actual feel and smell of the pages just reinforce the sense of an exceptional and valuable piece of literature that is extremely well packaged.

This is a brilliant edition of Plato's collected works, which is excellent value for money. Of course, you can probably buy them all very cheaply in an eBook format now - but the hard-copy is easier to use if you are studying and therefore need to make cross references regularly. There are many many gems here, and you do not have to love everything about Plato to get huge value from this book.

The only drawback is the sheer size of the book - which is simply a result of Plato's prodigious output - and if that is the price to pay for getting everything at once, it is a very small price!
