First impression: when you open 1000 Artists' Books, there are many exciting, inspiring books, many of them are unconventional in some way. In most cases you see the cover and at least one interior view, which I find important. The authors have done a great job in choosing a variety of exciting, usual artists' books. Be sure to use the "look inside," it has a generous number of pages. I am delighted to have several of my books included in this book.

1000 Artists' Books is divided into four chapters: 1. Codex books, (books with pages joined to make a spine); 2. Accordion and fold-able books (books with multiple-fold pages); 3. Single sheet books (stacks of pages, scrolls); 4. Sculptural books (books made from objects and objects made into books). Chapters 1, 2 and 4 are each roughly 30% of the book. Chapter 3 is about 60 photos. In the back is an image directory that lists the title, materials, etc. for each book. There is also an artist directory, listing urls and email addresses. Some people have said it is a little awkward to flip between the photos and the image directory. I put a book mark in the image directory to make this easier.

This book, while containing terrific images of Artist Books, is not well organized. There is no context to the books.

None of the books shown are titled or described on the pages upon which they appear. By the time you've looked at all the books, if you still have the time and energy, the titles and brief descriptions can be found, but not easily, in the back of the book. You will have to find the page on which the book appears, remember it and then look it up, not by artist's name, but by its title. Too much work.

When I look at a book of this type, I want to know immediately what the book is about, not simply the name of the artist. "500 Handmade Books" (Lark) does it best. That said, it's great to see Artist Books celebrated and know that there are wonderful books being made everywhere.

This splendid volume is truly a beautiful work. It would have benefited from some written introductory material, at least a general overview of artists' books, a little known field. Still, this must rank as one of the truly handsome works of the year

What a gorgeous book! The only fault I can find with it is that not enough information is given about the books. It would be nice to know what type of paper, what method of printing, is it a one-off? What are the covers made of? These are all questions of infinite interest to us as book artists and book lovers. I gave it 4 stars for this reason.

Still, don't let it stop you from buying this book. You can always look the artists up online to see how they create their books.

1000 Artists' Books has some of the most fascinating hand-crafted books I've ever seen. This 320-page paperback packs 1000 wonderful pictures of them.

You'll be amazed at what can be turned into pages and books. There are books with wooden covers, one that looks like a guitar, another is a building complete with signage, one literally has a nest of eggs. Many use specially designed paper, like clear plastic, sponge-like seaweed thing, canvas of indescribable textures and more. There are so many different treatment and presentation. Every page is a surprise.

Towards the back is a section called Sculptural Books that really push the concept of what's possible. Although they no longer fall into the categories as books, they still are great pieces of art and craft.

Fascinating collection of artists books.

The photographs are large enough to enjoy details. This is my Sunday morning with coffee and nobody is home book. As a book artist, I spend hours getting ideas - a twist on this or that. The book is organized according to structure type, for example, single sheet books or accordion style. I'm surprised by how many of the book artists I know in this volume. These are interesting and accessible artists.

This book is top shelf favorite!

While the photos of all these wonderful creations are truly inspiring, I love books that teach techniques much more. I'm not interested in copying the book art pieces; learning some techniques would inspire me to create more of my own. Having said that, I do love the awesome photography of this book and find it inspiring to the max.

This is definitely a coffee table book. The "Artists" books featured are exquisite. It offers so many ideas. I have found a few artists on live who give classes and look forward to learning from them.
